Can anyone recommend a hotel in Stuttgart?

Staying 3 nights in september, leisure travel with mrsdoc.

We were planning on hiring car, but like to be able to walk/transit (bus/short taxi ride) easily to dinner in the evenings, so airport hotels probably not the go.

Also, driving Stuttgart-Munich, any tips/recommendations? Or is train easier?

Can't recommend a hotel but can recommend the following website to find hotels in Germany (and Europe) generally:

Booking.com: 66000+ hotels worldwide. Book your hotel now!

I have used them for Munich and Hamburg and found their hotel description and guest comments to be very accurate. Also, you can cancel and you don't have to pre pay as is the case with many on line things these days,

Haven't stayed in Stuttgart central, only near the Airport at HI Express. I would suggest getting somewhere near town, eg Le Meridien.

Driving on the Autobahn is very easy as long as you stick to the rules. Just follow the A8 from Munich to Stuttgart. Train might be easier depending on where you're coming from in/near Munich. I've always used Europcar for rentals in Germany...

Thanks - I have an avis booking at EU110 (total) for three days which seems pretty good (Hertz quoting EU400 for the same!), and train looks like costing EU90-100 for the two of us so i'd rather drive all else being equal. Never used Europcar before, but am happy with Avis (usually use hertz fwiw).

Any tips on restaurants / anything else in Stuttgart also appreciated - it seems it's not that common a destination on this board!

MELuser - thanks, will try that link.

futaris - saw there's a HI at airport, good back up plan if i cant find anything else i like. Will look at le meridien too. Did you just overnight (tips on restaurants etc?)

Personally i would not stay at the Le Meridien stuttgart again. You will see why when i finally start completing my trip report.overpriced for what you get and still a little walk into the centre of town.
have just completed nearly 2 weeks of driving around germany.Did not go to Munich but did drive through the Black Forest which is not a huge detour of the autobahn between Stuttgart and Munich-again the roads will be in my TR.Thoroughly enjoyed the driving.

Holiday Inn Hotel Stuttgart-Weilimdorf is not in the city but has car parking which some other hotels do not. Also although its a few stops out of the city it is directly on a train line so unless you like late nights (ie after midnight) then you should be safe.

Make sure you get a 3 days rail pass, 9.50 for 3 days on S-bahn & U-Bahn.

Kongress hotel europe etc is ok.
Whats you budget i visit Stuttgart often so know the area reasonably well and have sampled a few hotels.

A nice local restaurant (not the theatre next door)
Rosenau die Lokalität · Stuttgart || mfG AD1.de

I will try to give some more info when i have time.

Thanks Evan, HI looks like the go then. Carparking handy (have rental car).

Just planning basic sight-seeing (Porsche Museum definitely and maybe the Mercedes one as well if i can drag mrsdoc there as well!)

3 day rail pass looks like good value! Maybe we ditch the car entirely - how hard is it to get around without one? I gather taxi from STR to the HI would be pricey though b/c the car is only EU100 for the three days, and that'll get us to Munich and when i priced the train it was EU90 for the two of us one way, so really having the car gives flexibility.

No fixed budget, would rather spend a bit extra and stay somewhere decent and in decent location. HI looks the go (seems aorund what the budget should be for somewhere decent).

Any other tips/info/things to do is much appreciated.

Definitely go to the Mercedes museum.I dragged mrsdrron along and she really enjoyed it.A very good restaurant there and the prices were reasonable.
