With reluctance our trip to Vietnam via Hong Kong began after I offered my mum a holiday to where ever she wished in J class on redemption points ... I tried to nudge her in the direction of Paris but Vietnam it was to be..!!

Vietnam was never on my wish list but hang I was going on a holiday where there was some French influence at least so excitement set in.
On the 11[SUP]th[/SUP] May we flew from Cairns to Hong Kong on CX102 A330-300 @ 3:20 pm (53k points each) .

The lounge in Cairns is comfortable and we met some people we knew going on the same flight.
The aircraft is so tired looking, but the coffin seats I still find comfortable.

The service was nice and the food good for this 7hr flight.

My mum thinks I’ve lost the plot to be taking photo’s until I explain the AFF thing:)

We checked in to the Stanford Hotel in Mongkok that evening, thought it was in a great spot, nice & clean. Ladies Market was 2 blocks away and was central to get to wherever we wished. This was $167 per night not incl breakfast. I recommend this place if you don't want to spend alot.

We visited the Peak, The Harbour and of course the shops in one day then flying on to Ho Chi Minh city with CX to connect with our VN flight into Danang enroute to Hoi An. Our flight was at 8:50 on economy flight CX767 777-300ER such an early start :( for such an uncomfortable flight. The seats on this aircraft was truely painful even for such a short flight. The meal was quite good just horrid seats.

We landed in Ho Chi Minh then made our way to the domestic. WOW ! was a bit of shock to me, it was about this time I wanted to scold my mother for going to Vietnam. It was so hot & I’m from the Far North ! I’m thinking about now OMG what have I done.... ! So many people just hanging around the airport. (country girl I am)

We had to wait for almost 4 hrs at SGN for VN1324, it was a long, long wait..! It was a big relief to get moving again. The ATM didn’t work there, we were lucky 1 shop accepted my card to buy a drink and snack.
The VN flight was quite good & comfortable. I had organised private transfer to Hoi An with the accommodation. Costing $20 US.

I'm out of my quota for adding pics so I'll have to go to flickr and continue then

The food in Hoi An was awesome with awesome prices.. Anyone who loves food will enjoy this place. We also had some clothes made at BeBe, was a little on the expensive side but I can recommend another place that 2 others used and their work was excellent. Their web site is Van Cloth Shop.

Now to show you some pics of the delicious Hoi An food :)

An Bang Beach was a $4-$5 taxi ride from our accommodation. Was beautiful, almost as nice as ours in the North :)

Maybe the photo quota you were seeing was the limit per post rather than overall limit-think I have 16mb photo limit to use.
Enjoying the trip report so far.

Very nice TR.

Been to Hoi An & greater Vietnam, enjoyed it that much.....we went back for a second time.

Thanks for posting:D

I really enjoyed Hoi An, cruised around on the back of scooters, ate, chatted with the locals. Here is a selection of my fav's

thanks RB seems you are correct.

With sadness we left Hoi An and our new friends for Hanoi with Vietnam airlines. What a nice aircraft, comfort and ambiance.

Arranged private transfer via the hotel Essence staying in the Old Quarter. I have to say I wished I had've booked accommodation on the outskirts of the Old Quarter as I found this far too manic to be dragging my mum around. The Hotel Essence is the top of the range 3* and we had a room each for $47 incl breakfast. DSCF4552.JPGDSCF4553.JPG Ummm, very nice for $4 or $5....

Our main reason for going to Hanoi was to visit Halong Bay. It was worth being in the manic city of Hanoi for Halong. We chose a 5* boat and hoped the 3.5 hrs bus transfer would be ok. Well what a road :( It was suggested to get a private transfer there and back, after doing the bus I suggest at the minimum get private car on the way back at least for about $60 US. Quicker, hopefully not as rough. We were happy to escape the manic city of Hanoi for the majestic Halong Bay

On the cruise I met a lady who is the Corp Sales Manager for Etihad and previously employed by Emirates for the past 16 years.
Great conversation about her role and the differences between the two companies the way they were managed.

Nice TR - Vietnamese spring rolls are delicious! I was in Vietnam earlier this year, spending time in Hoi An and surrounds. It's a beautiful country, I will definitely go back again to see more of it.

Departing Hanoi on SIA we left for the airport by transfer of $18 US. The lounge there was comfortable, the food looked ok.

We departed on SIA to Sing with a 2.5 hr stopover. We showered and had a little bit of food then time to board the A380 into Syd. I was looking forward to that not being on one yet. DSCF4793.JPG

We entered straight upstairs so I didn't get to see the stairs or get an idea of how big it was. I've decided I don't like those big seats, they are uncomfortable and the aircraft didn't seem any quieter then others. But I will have to try another A380 :) :) Flew into Syd then back home to Cairns... !!

Your Mum will remember the trip for many years and you will reflect on the trip many many times in years to come

Great TR. In future years the highlight of this trip was going with your mother. You should be proud of yourself.
