In a previous thread I got some good advice about cheap travel insurance but now I have the following dilemma:

My wife is Irish (temp 4yr working visa in Australia) and our daughter (10 wks) is Australian Citizen. They are traveling together on a trip to Europe and need insurance. The Australian insurances won't insure her as she is not Australian Perm Resident or Citizen. The Irish insurances won't insure because she has not lived in Ireland for the last 6 months. Our daughter can't take out insurance because she is a "dependent" infant.

I'm joining them later but will have insurance through my work (I'm traveling for business).
One option could be for me to take out insurance for the family BUT I'm not with them for the whole trip so not sure if this possible.

HELP (really don't want them overseas without insurance) !:?:

Any ideas ?

Have you tried Medibank? It seems to cover non-residents living in Australia.

A few words of warning.

Our family had a distressing time recently when an Australian relative and her British husband (both living in UK at the time) had an accident while on holiday abroad. He died instantly and she some weeks later.

Claiming expenses from travel insurance was the last thing on our minds when family members rushed to her side but it was upseting later to find that some costs were not covered just because they were incurred by non-UK residents. And I won't go into the nightmare of trying to arrange possible return to Australia for rehabilitation when it was thought she would survive or the return of her body when she didn't. Insurance only covered return to UK and they would not make the equivalent financial contribution to the costs to Australia.

So read any policy very carefully and imagine the worst possible scenarios for all concerned (death, major accident, severe illness etc) to be sure that it will take account of your family's particular circumstances.

Thank You - Medibank does indeed cover non-residents (funnily the insurer is Mondial who actually don't insure non-residents when going direct to them). A bit more expensive but a least good coverage.

A very sad story about your relatives but proves that you can't take the risk of being under (or not) insured while overseas.
