Re: The totally off-topic thread

Bit of a long blah here: A lot of you colleagues might know, iSelect used to be linked to either QFF/Qpoints or VFFVelocityRewards (just like Quickflixs and the old Telstra dvd rental service).
Both (QF and VA) are no longer in the iSelect program. Neither is Quickflix anymore.
I made the mistake of doing some research for cheaper than Optus Home Broadband, iSelect needs a phone number.
I have spoken to one of the customer support/sales girls, as she had called me up, and I explained that I am just chasing up home broadband and home phone deal for my parents, who are pensioners.
Optus will have 200gb home broadband for $70 for pensioners, $80 for others.
Iselect will keep calling you up, if you enter your phone number onto their online system.
For 3 different days now, I had in the first place, I will call them back, when my parents do decide on what they want, but iSelect keeps phoning up, every day.
If any of you colleagues are chasing up deals, there are some websites, where you can chase up info on prices of deals, where you don't have to enter personal details.
Iselect gets money from utilities/phone companies/broadband companies, so they will phoning you daily.
I have learnt a lesson, avoid anything that asks for your contact details, even if it says "no commitments queries accepted".

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Denali, that thing looks like is a huge behemoth!
Its a large size. Hubby likes soft roller trolley type bags, I wanted hard shell. This was the compromise and although well made, I dont like it.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I bought 3 Tumi wheeled cases that fit into the overhead bins. You can never be happy with the Tumi price but we are happy with the the quality of the build. They have worked for us.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

My suitcase - soft orange antler - took forever to arrive in our cruise cabin last week while +1's arrived hours earlier. When it finally arrived just before departure it wasn't damaged but looked like it had been dragged along the ground by a truck. Absolutely filthy. I'll throw it away when I get home. I can only imagine the damage and scrapes if it had been a hard shell.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

The problem with this bag is its basically storage in 3rds

Half zip so left hand side/hard side is one compartment.

Right hand side is then broken up in 3 other compartments, so basically you are forced to use 2 extra locks if you use the front upper and lower compartments.

I wish it had just middle split, one lock needed only for middle zip.

After having travelled halfway around the world and back with as much of my life as I could cram into about 3 bags, I'm sold on soft shell cases. They may seem less durable, particularly to carpet knives, but their flexibility cannot be opposed compared to a hard shell.

As for protection, yes the hard shell might marginally provide better resistance, but for protecting what's inside, nothing that a well thought out packing cannot solve.

Now naturally if you are not a heavy packer or shopper, you may get away easily with one hard shell bag.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

It doesnt matter to me if its hard shell or soft shell. I just will not buy any more of the half shell type - the ones with the zipper in the middle and the two halves split. I just dont like that type of packing !!!

Lots of bags are of those type. Do you have the type where it's basically like a lid at one end that zips up?

I agree with you there mrs.dr.ron. I had a friend with a Samsonite hardshell when we travelled to Singapore last year. She had to basically open the whole case out to get at anything rather than just zip around the top. We use carry on size Pacsafe which have a hard(ish) back but good zippers etc. They are a little heavy but not bad. I find the 4 wheel numbers are a pain on anything that is uneven so prefer two larger wheels where possible.

Denali you must have an awful lot of packing for a case that size.

My husband does not travel light! Its his tripod and camera bits box and other stuff that apparently is essential to his photography - not his cameras, thats in his backpack/carryon.

Min clothing as I do hotel laundry as we go - he just has "stuff". Drives me nuts.

Well don't I feel like a fool... most (all?) soft shell bags are that type with a lid that opens to a deep shell; cf. hard shells that are the split clam type you despise.

I should know this as I've pretty much converted to soft shells.

I see you're not a full on photography buff ;) neither am I, but I do know that photography can bring about a lot of equipment. My sister carries a DSLR and maybe a lens and flash unit with her, all in a separate carry bag. Some members here are professional photographers with heavy equipment, however due to the financial and physical sensitivity of the equipment they somehow manage to convince and compel the airlines to allow them to carry the heavy equipment on board.

The hobby might explain the desire for a hard shell case, despite its inflexibility.

What's the other "stuff"?

Stuff. Tripod, tripod handle thingy so he can angle the camera, umbrella bracket, cords and powerboard and lots of stuff that he has to take. He's got a little tool box full of bits and pieces.

His carry on has his camera bodies, lenses, filters and laptop but everything else is check in.
