Any tips for a brief stay in Montevideo? Not much scope for going out of town; so suggestions for restaurants, hotels, districts to stay in the city region, please?

Just near the cruise terminal is :: Mercado del Puerto :: which I really liked. Lots of cafes and bars

So some video of penguins, scenery etc This woman was knitting madly while still serving customers Check out the penguins in the background having a push and shove

Make sure you pay any restaurant bills / car hire with overseas credit card as you will be rebated the VAT / GST automatically.

I think it was deducted immediately when you paid with the overseas credit card so you only paid the amount less the VAT.

It looks like VAT discounts are more nuanced now. It was much simpler when I was last there in 2019. Check out this link;
