I want to raise a question about abusive posts and the standards that apply.

Earlier this year I was subjected to the following insult:

you to be an arrogant pig,

This was left unmoderated in a thread for 3 days (it's actually still on AFF if you look) until I replied. I don't find this to be an acceptable standard. Am I being too sensitive?

Within 30 minutes of my reply, I was asked to edit the post. The insult was changed to an implied insult and my replied was similarly changed to be in exactly. Based on previous advice from a moderator that implied insults are acceptable. Now my post was then deleted. The original insult remained in modified format until I kicked up a massive stink. I feel that there appeared to be 2 standards applied. So what is the standard? Why am I open to being called an arrogant pig or to being subjected to an implied insult, with moderation approval?

Welcome back medhead.

I don't think anyone should stand for being called such on this board. I also don't think the user is around any more, although I don't know the circumstances of that users departure.

Let me respond.

The moderators (and myself) are human. We are not online all of the time. Sometimes things do "slip through the crack". When this does happen, I urge you to use the "Report a Post" function. This sends an email to all moderators and myself. We will then take action, if deemed appropriate.

There is only one standard which is applied to ALL our members. But again, we are only human and at times "mistakes" are made. When this is brought to our attention, we will correct the "mistake", if appropriate. There are also a lot of "greyness" in what we do. At times there is no clear right or wrong action. In these cases our mods do confer (if possible) and make a collective call. Do we get it right all the time? Probably not. But usually, we do.

Remember also, that all our mods are volunteers. At times non-AFF matters do take priority, and we might not respond as quickly as we should. Thats the nature of ALL online forums.

I think the vast majority of our members will agree that our Mods to an OUTSTANDING job in applying our standards consistently and without bias.

I am now going to close this thread, as public comment about moderation is not permitted on AFF. Feel free to PM with specifics, if further clarification is required.
