At check-in you can elect to get double or triple your miles from the flight at a cost.

Basically you're buying AA points at not a great rate (>3c / mile).

flown over 1M miles with AA and never used the mileage multiplier, the promotions (buy/share/gift) miles tend to be better value. The only people I have seen use mileage multiplier are those a few thousand short of some award flight that they are wanting to take in the near future.
