My apologies if there was a thread started today for general discussion about today's fog related delays at MEL, but the only one (apart from some specific comments I made under QF or JQ pages) that I could see was an 'Ask the pilot' question which this is not.
Tonight MH129 (aircraft Airbus A330 9M-MTO) has been suddenly diverted from MEL to SYD. It is about to arrive in SYD at 2100. Normally it arrives MEL at 2025.
Surely this is an unusual location to divert an international flight at night to.
While it isn't the only flight diverted (TT472 looks to have been sent back to its ADL origin without landing in MEL and TT263 was previously diverted this evening, while VA228 from ADL to MEL and VA870 from SYD to MEL look to have suffered the same fate) and not all airports will be suitable for landing of all aircraft types (I haven't checked, but visibility may be low at airports other than MEL) and international flights may not carry sufficient fuel to safely go to some alternatives, isn't it likely that MH passengers won't now depart on MH128 until well after 0600 tomorrow if MH129 cannot reach MEL tonight?
