Dear all,

Firstly, thank you all for sparing your time for this invaluable resource! Than you for addressing my conundrum.

I am travelling to MCO for a week from MEL in April 2019. I'm travelling J.

I have recently acquired Gold with SQ and this provides me with an opportunity to accumulate points to extend Gold to one more year (up to July 2020). As a family, we travel to South Asia at least once a year on Y. So, will make up the 50000 required to retain Gold if I make this J trip on SQ.

However, SQ trips are at least 6-8 hours more each way. Whereas, OW (no status) flights appear less physically painful. When travelling Y, I have access to some lounge everywhere as I have PlatCharge. However, the lure of using SilverKris Lounge everywhere else (except Changi, where you will be shunted to SQ Gold Lounge, if travelling Y) makes me want to take this SQ run to MCO and back.

Am I thinking in the right direction? A little pain for a year of goodies? I stick to *A everywhere I go usually and there is nice connectivity to Europe (recently did a J run on SQ to LHR - heavenly!!).

Having said thus, I thought the SilverKris Lounge at Mel is starting to appear a bit tired and dated.... I have seen much better lounges via PP.

I think you're on the right track if you're able to earn SQ status with your usual travel.

Personally I don't mind the SQ Gold lounges and it wouldn't be an issue for me.

Don’t forget the other side. The non-status-best-fare-of-day side.

The only time you need the benefits of status is when you are travelling Y.

It really comes down to the value of your hard earned status. How much more are you paying to run on the status treadmill? Is it really worth it for the x number of times travelling Y?.

Many thanks for your thought provoking advise. I like "the non status best fare of the day" quote!
