We will be travelling to Melbourne for a week with Mrs Sparoz and my by then 7 months old daughter. Any suggestions on where to stay? We haven't really even plan what we will be doing, but probably thinking of driving to Daylesford for stay there for 3 days. I am SPG Gold and HH Diamond, but I am happy to go away from the chains for convenience.

I find it pretty hard to go past the Hilton South wharf in MEL these days. Some say docklands, where the hotel is located, is a bit out of the way, but its really just 15 minutes walk to the city. If you have a car it won't be an issue at all.

The drive from south wharf to daylesford is almost direct freeway access (jump on freeway near hotel and keep driving for 1 1/2 hours)
It is a good hotel and certainly good upgrades as a Diamond.
I love the suites at the Sofitel also

Many thanks for the replies. I will be staying at South Wharf for a conference next week and see what my wife likes to do for July. Good to know it has got some good feedback.

HSW is a great hotel and an easy walk into the city.. The Westin is also good but not at convenient if you have a car as driving in the CBD is a pain.

I stayed at the Sofitel a few weeks ago. I booked through its website a Bay view room (or something along those lines). I def thought we got value for $. Room service breakfast was also tasty. We didnt have a car, although we have family who drove into the city and picked us up 2 days in a row, was easy to get in and out of the city both times.

I am at HSW this weekend for a conference. Fantastic hotel - good rooms and the staff are exceptional. A pity food at the bar and the exec lounge is not as good as the Gold Coast Hilton but otherwise very good expensive.
