SPOTTERS MUST LOOK ELSEWHERE

MEL aircraft spotters using a popular Sunbury Rd area will need to find a new one as the site will be closed for 18 months while a new solar farm is built nearby.

Viewing areas to the west and south of the airfield will still be open.

Now a change.org petition.

Outraged plane spotters are calling on the Melbourne Airport to keep the popular viewing area open despite nearby construction works.
A change.org petition calling on people to “save our airport viewing area” has more than 5300 signatures in just three days.

News comes a week after the airport announced it would close the site for 18 months to act as a staging area for the construction of a nearby solar farm.

Tourists and locals alike flock to the site every day to see planes take off from the airport.

It’s so popular a Mr Whippy van even makes regular stops.

The Leader understands the spotting area will undergo a revamp before it reopens in 2021.

The petition said the closure had the potential to “affect the many small businesses which operate in the viewing area”.

“While the idea of generating renewable energy is fantastic and long overdue for the airport, the chosen location has been selected with no thought to the local community and how much of a negative impact it will have,” it read.

In better news, BNE is constructing a specific area for spotters to view the new 01L/19R and the nearby taxiways.

It would be nice if they’d build something on the western side which would give a view over the fence....
