Hello AFF brains trust,

I tried to search the AFF site to find answers to my questions, but could not find them.

I thinking of flying from MEL to DUB, then DUB to Paris, and then return to MEL, all on the one booking (i.e. multi-city).

The cheapest option for an Economy fare I could find is MEL-AUH-DUB with Etihad (EY), then DUB-CDG with an AF codeshare, then CDG-MEL with EY. This fare is about $2000.

The next cheapest option is an Air France booking: MEL-SIN (QF), SIN-CDG (AF), CDG-DUB (AF codeshare), then DUB-CDG with an AF codeshare, then CDG-SIN (AF), and then SIN-MEL (QF). This fare is about $2500.

The BA and EK princes are over $3000.

The EY option is cheaper with fewer connections. But the reviews of EY economy are not great. While the AF booking option costs more and has more connections on the outward leg, the service on the AF and QF flights seem to be better than EY.

My questions are: which of the two cheaper booking options would you recommend, and is there an alternative I have not considered?

What about a straight MEL-DUB-MEL return with a DUB-CDG-DUB sidetrip?

JQ to BKK then AY to CDG. Depending on your dates, J may even be cheaper than the options you've listed.

If your MEL to AUH flight is on the A380 I would seriously consider EY. Other things to consider are if you are wedded to any FF program or have lounge access in any of them may sway your decision. 10 abreast on a 777 doesn't sound like fun for 14 hours, but is probably doable for the AUH - Europe leg.

Oh and look at pricing DUB-CDG separately with an open jaw into DUB and returning from CDG

If you are prepared to have them on different tickets you should be able to pick up a one way DUB-CDG on its own for as little as $30 on Aerlingus, Easyjet or Ryanair.
