I would forget about eating in most of the hotel chains. One thing that is big in the US is eating out.You will find a great variety of restaurants with large servings of reasonable food at reasonable prices. Many have specials with the GFC really affecting US restaurants.
There are a lot of middle of the road chains you could look up on the net such as applebees,Ruby tuesdays,Chilis, tony Romas and even for a laugh The Outback Steakhouse to see what they think Aussie food is like. With many of these you can join up for emails on line and receive regular offers for discounts.I am not sure whether all of these are in Hawaii.
Then of course there are all the local restaurants at virtually every price point. We rarely eat at our hotel apart from breakfast.

Mumof2,

Eating is farily cheap in the US, even in Hawaii (depending on exchange rate, of course). Even with the exchange rate, at many restaurants in Hawaii, you'd be able to order a main to share with kids - portions are American sized. We stayed at the Embassy Suites in Waikiki, and there was a happy hour every night, with free drinks (decent range, including spirits - for the adults ;)) and chips/snacks and soft drinks. Our 2.5 yo would eat the snacks, and she'd be fine with something small for dinner - or it would at least mean she wasn't ravenous while waiting to order/be served. There are heaps of restaurants, and even food courts, throughout Waikiki, and you can eat out as a family within a budget. Our hotel also included a very decent buffet brekky each day.
ABC stores are kind of like 7-11, but you can get some sandwiches and lunches on the go there, including the famous Hawaiian Spam sushi. :)

thanks katie - i have seen very mixed reviews for embassy suites : esp regarding the pool and not being kid freindly...did that bother you? (esp when hiltons pool is so nice with waterslides etc?)

My husband wanted to stay at the HHV, as that's where he'd stayed on his first trip to Hawaii, which was without me. The main reason we chose Embassy Suites was the separate bedroom - meaning we could have a single hotel room, not two, but still be able to shut the door on Miss 2.5 without having to shut ourselves in the bathroom - which we did on at least two occasions in regular sized hotel rooms in Europe in 2008. I think your kids are older, but that suite room, and the included brekky, was the #1 advantage for us. We went to the pool almost every day, as Miss 2.5 didn't like the beach much, except to play with sand. There was a big spa, a small kiddie pool at one end, and then the regular pool, but they were all together. The pool was fine enough for our 2.5yo, with the $2.50 blow-up ring from the ABC store. If your kids are older, they might want a more exciting pool. And if you are around the pool late in the afternoon, you might score some choc-dipped strawberries from one of the chefs - they must hand out the leftovers after the honeymooners are organised. :)

I thought the hotel, and most everywhere, was kid friendly. Hawaiians love kids, and they didn't even get cranky when Miss 2.5 would join the hula dancing on stage each night at the happy hour. A great kid-friendly restaurant is Senor Frog, across the road from Embassy Suites and upstairs from PF Changs - there's an inflatable jumping castle in there! Great fun for kids, although most restaurants had some kind of activity pack they'd give her, this one had lots of kiddo activities going on as well.

Does that mean Santa brought Miss 2.5 a little brother or sister for Xmas then? ;) ;)

Cheers Oz

great story Katie, thank you again - i will put embassy suites back on the shortlist and see what deal pop up between now and then!

We have also stayed in apartment style accom in Waikiki (Resortquest Waikiki Beach TOWER) - check out Tripadvisor for reports. This can save you money on food - we made breakfast & lunch in the unit and ate out at night. Cheesecake factory serves a vast variety of meals (excellent quality and reasonably priced) which are big enough to share. Can also recommend the California Wok at the Ala Moana shopping centre.
