Brisbane is the pits… well at least the traffic is. OK all you Queenslanders who are going to jump down my throat and tell me Melbourne is worse or Sydney is worse or even Didyabringabeeralong is worse but wait, there is only one question you need to answer today…

Q: WHICH CITY IN THE WORLD PUTS TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON A SUPER BUSY ROUNDABOUT?
A: BRISBANE!

Being a frequent traveler to Brisbane and it’s outlying burbs such as Ipswich, I experience the traffic frequently. Just last week, (Tuesday) it took me longer to get from BNE domestic to Ipswich (toll way all the way) than it did for me to get from MEL to BNE!

Instead of heading back to MEL from BNE on Friday, Mrs! Deposited the dog into the kennels (our dog is spoiled and gets a balcony suite, a TV in her home away from home and “yappy time” every day) jumped a QF to BNE to meet up with me and have a nice weekend indulging in everything the BNE Hilton had to offer. Great except it took over 2 hours to travel from the city to the airport, pick her up and then back to the Hilton. Grrrrrr – my naughty plans binned due to my bad temper at the Brisbane traffic!

Again this morning (Monday), we checked out of the Hilton in a good mood, happy with our 3 night break and refreshed ready to ride out the rough patches till next we get a nice break together – only – Mrs! Had a 0750 MEL flight (my SYD flight is an hour later) and low and behold – BNE traffic managed to ruin my morning! We left with at least 30 mins up our sleeves, we planned to have a latte in the QC etc…

From dropping the hire car and racing across the road – I bee lined straight for counter 26, under the tape and had her luggage (and my golf clubs) checked in with 2 mins to spare from the 30 min cut off point. Getting our respective boarding passes, over to “over sized luggage” only to be delayed further – the bomb squad naz_s are checking every bag! I asked if they also checked luggage other than over size – she said no, so the appropriate question was to then ask why they checked all oversize – no answer.

Anyway, Mrs! Flight was being called and my clubs were still waiting to go in the conveyer. Mrs! couldn’t leave either as she was taking them home for me – another Grrrrr was uttered from my lips and finally we were on our way. Amazingly neither of us were harassed by the secret service (cleverly disguised as gorillas pretending to be checking for bomb making residue on your bags) on our way through and we headed straight for gate 17 where Mrs! Boarded.
I stood looking for my clubs to arrive but alas, I never saw them before the plane was pushed back.

Q: WHERE’S DIDYABRINGABEERALONG?

And breathe...................

Sensing a little frustration there :)

Just in answer to your first question regarding which cities in the world put lights on a busy roundabout... London, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo...

Try this on Saturday morning - Dropped to keen AFFer/FTers off at Breakfast Creek Hotel @11:40am then took two other to drop bags off at their hotels before returning to the pub.

Via "the Valley", to Eagle St, to Sofitel and back took 55 Minutes! This is a 12 km trip!

If you are talking about the roundabout just before Airport Drive, then IMHO the lights have made an improvement at this roundabout. Brisbane has some serious traffic issues these days. I have started taking the Air Train to central station as our office is one block away from the station.

I find the airtrain is preferable! Mind you I'm not travelling with either a set of golf clubs or a Mrs and the train doesn't run that conveniently too early or late in the day...but, yes, BNE traffic has reached, and often passes, the tipping point into chaos...

I travel to BNE enough to purchase those books of 10 Airtrain tcikets for $110; they can be used concurrently for parties of 2+.

UPDATE FOR THOSE WHO CARE

My golf clubs did arrive safe and in 1 piece (13 pieces actually) - they must have got to the aircraft in less time than it took Mrs! and myself to get to the departure gate.

THANKS FOR CARING

Good to hear - I travel with clubs almost every time i go away (a important piece of my work coughnal you know!) and i am surprised that they have remained as the manufaturer intended on all these trips - now its up to DJ to make sure this continues in a few weeks!

Yes the traffic in good old QLD is really getting bad.Put it down to all the Mexicans coming here to live.As a trucky friend of mine said his desire on retirement is to buy the biggest caravan he can find and drive it around Victoria-SLOWLY.

Its obvious from a statement like that that neither you or your trucky friend drive in Victoria very often. I also find your post insulting an a moderator should remove it.

I don't see how you would find it insulting as it was obviously said in jest. Get over it.

Boy we are touchy. That traffic must have been very bad.I am not sure what my driving in Victoria has to do with it but it appears the Bruce highway in winter months is not on your driving agenda. You can run into convoys of caravans and our truckies do get a bit touchy on that subject.Especially as many of them die each year on Qld roads and many of them put the blame on holiday motorists, not just the road conditions.

I wasn't overly touchy, just feeling a little sensitive :-| towards the Mexicans whom it would seem holiday in abundance in Australia. I suppose that explains why you can buy Corona and SOL at most pubs now - to cater for them there Amigo's on holiday

LOL

Maybe a few people should look at the actual statistics as the numbers are reversing and the reasons given are poor roads and general infrastructure.

I travelled to BNE often about 7 years ago on a monthly basis, and then restarted back up to QLD over the last 12 months, going up every second weekend. The traffic on the motorways truly is worse than Melbourne or Sydney (I use all three cities main arterials currently)...they do have a bucket load of works going on atm and I hope that it does improve.
The large stretch between g/coast and say springwood area is pretty goo, from that point inward FORGET IT...

I am hoping for some improvements when the bridge and surrounding works are complete.

As for that stupid roundabout with lights... it is not functioning and another solution needs to be found....
