...It would have been extremely traumatic for the people involved for the duration of the flight (and beyond).

Yes I agree. How terrible for the crew, medical team, his travelling companion and the other close by Paxs. I could only imagine the somber mood in the aircraft.

BTW where would they have stowed the body? I would hope in a toilet and not in a seat or on the floor with a blanket over his head? I assume there are procedures on how to handle such a situation?

Just to clarify, the News Ltd and NZ Herald articles refer to a flight FROM Singapore TO Auckland so he was going home sadly. That would make it 3K401, sometime in the last week. A rather long flight but if the deceased was originally from NZ then it has probably saved the family a lot of issues getting him back home. Truly awful experience I would imagine, I doubt we realise how helpless we really all are up there until you see such a thing.

Makes you wonder what you would do in a similar situation if it was your partner, it must have been a very long flight for her!

I don't really see the point of all the discussion about turning around. I assume the crew would have sought advice and discussed with relatives on board and possibly on the ground as well.

I have been involved in repatriating a relative who died abroad (of old age). The legal formalities and delays in a country where you have no support would make this very unpleasant. Many people accompany their deceased relatives on repatriation anyway albeit in a more dignified fashion. I would have kept going like this family did.

This does happen from time to time. People will die regardless of the location, and obviously j* acted properly and had full respect for the deceased and his partner.
All i can say is it must have been a slow news day, and really dont understand why the airline had to be named. Surely, if theyHAD to put a story in, then a basic summary would have sufficed. Personally, i dont think the story was newsworthy, and i mean no disrespect to the deceased or his family by saying that, it just was not required nor news

I could think of nothing worse for his partner than being stuck on that flight.
It's certainly not the fault of JQ, it's unfortunately one of those things...

My sympathy certainly goes out to his partner.

It certainly would have been a nightmare watching it. :(

I can - The flight turning around and being dumped in a foreign country alone with a dead partner. I would much prefer to continue home and be met by family.

I do personally know of a family who experience something as difficult as this, maybe even worse. They were overseas when they learnt their child (19) had developed septicemia and was unconscious and on life support. The parents had to fly all the way back from overseas to Australia as an emergency flight. I cannot imagine the hours spent on the plane to get to his side. The lad died within a couple of hours of their arrival, but news of his death was put all over Facebook while the family was still travelling. He was a friend of my son.

Jetstar offers passengers $100 compensation for flying with dead man

  • Coroner to probe cause of death
  • Body stays on flight for nine hours
  • Passengers offered $100 compensation
Jetstar passengers who were forced to fly with the corpse of a man have been offered $100 in travel vouchers as compensation.

The airline contacted passengers who were sitting near Mr Rippingale to thank them for their patience during what would have been an "upsetting situation for them".

"They were offered a discount on future travel as a small acknowledgement of this," a Jetstar spokesperson said.

After reading all the comments on that website regarding the article (news.com.au), l would have to say that JQ did pretty well considering the circumstances.
Sad to say, the guy passed away (what more can you do?), partner was given an option (continue or land) and people on same flight got $100 compensation.

Imagine if the flight turned around and pax on the flight lost hotel bookings, missed onward connections, JQ would be in even more doo-doo. I think it happens more than we think (google, 2 minutes);

Not just a partner.

A friend died on a VA flight LAX-SYD last year with his 3 cousins (my friends as well) seated next to him. They thought he was sleeping and only realised what had happened when the FA tried to wake him for breakfast. Tried to revive him but it was too late. He was only 49 and it was very traumatic for his family.

Amazing statement. I have flown JQ a LOT, domestically and internationally in both StarClass and in Y exit rows. I consider JQ delivers excellent value for money and have never seen or experienced anything that would support such a statement. How many JQ flights have you done and what was the experience that backs up this statement of yours?

As for the Pax, S**t happens and with trained medical staff on the aircraft, I sure this event was one in a million and that the Pax would have suffered the same fate on a QF metal flight. For you to suggest this had anything to do with the JQ aircraft or FAs is just totally wrong.

I suggest you need to retract and to apologize for your statement.

You are quite correct, my comment should not have been raised in this thread.
It is corrrect that this unfortunate incident could of happened on ANY airline. My prejudice towards Jetstar is unapropriate in the context of this particular thread.
I have never flown on a Jetstar aircraft as both times i booked the flights were cancelled less than 1 hour before departure causing me to buy DJ in business at the last minute so i could make connecting flights

Excellent point... the articles states that the man's partner requested the flight continued on. Would be much better (and cheaper) to land at home rather than land in a foreign country and have to recover the body.
