Unboxing? Really? C'mon...if it was the Amex Centurion I could have let you go...
Remember, everyone has to become an elite level at least once. For those who 'get turned on by elite status' (to quote a film ;)) it's an exciting moment.

I admit to getting excited about parcels arriving like this. I won't snap photos of it to post on line, but I do keep the old kits in a cupboard (for no reason other than to take up space).

And, if it weren't for AFF, i'd probably be stuck at QF PS like I was for many years, toiling away down the back of the plane. I wouldn't have learned the optimal way to reach WP (where i've sat for 4 years now with no sign of losing it anytime soon). And that actually made me more excited. I used to think being PS made me a little special in QF's eyes, I now realise, that I was delusional ;) I've also lost the DYKWIA factor I used to feel when I first got PS.

If it was a Centurion unboxing I would call them something that may get me banned from the forum ;)

But yeah, keep posting elite card unboxings. Some of us understand ;)

Who knew that flying could be part of the holiday and not just the means to get to the holiday?

The unboxing is for everyone on this forum who has given advice to get me there.

I'd like to rename this thread "AFF You Made Me Platinum".

I will never be a DYKWIA, I'm just loving the benefits.

Thank you all :D

That certainly sums me up!

(my plat box went in the bin 30 secs after all the goodies were removed. The marketing was lost on me I'm afraid!)

Recently made VA Platinum myself - AFF, I couldn't have done it without you! Thanks! :D

Another one who has made VA platinum thanks to AFF - thanks for all the tips!:D

12 months ago I was aiming for silver for the 2 lounge passes, then happy hour fares came out and I went for gold.

Then the AFF status run spreadsheet appeared and I gained another 360 SC's for a net cost of around $200.

Today my account ticked over to platinum. Funnily enough I don't have any booking at all for the rest of the year now! Needless to say, thanks AFF!

You'll have to change that! No point having plat but missing out on the bennies ;).

Congratulations!

Actually that's a lie... I have 2 bookings in the system that I never made or recieved an itenary for. Using VirtuallyThere the PNR brings up a booking confirmation at least. Wonder what will happen if I turn up at the airport...

How long is it taking to receive your new platinum card?

I hit Platinum this morning (after sitting as a 1000SC SG on Tuesday from a flight on Monday.)
When I used mobile check-in today for the next flight the online checkin saw me as platinum, until I got to the end and my boarding pass and passbook still shows gold, doh. I wanted the new prettier colour!

Who can tell me what will happen come November when my Platinum qualification period comes up...

I've already requalified, so will I get another offer to go Hilton Diamond ad Europcar Elite? I use the Hilton membership a LOT, but I think would fall just short of maintaining diamond through stays. If I can pick it up again with Virgin, I'd be a very happy camper

I also picked up Hertz Presidents Circle almost purely based on the location of the office at Adelaide. A couple of bad experiences and I haven't bothered going back.... Stuck with Europcar exclusively for the points. I wish they would put a walkway at the other end of that bloody great big wall in Adelaide!

The partner offers are available once you attain or a soft landed a status, they do not reset when you requalify, so you will not get another chance.

In short... no. It's a one-shot thing. But changing status does open up the offers again. So fall to gold, you can choose again. Then rise back to platinum.... and so forth.

Well I just got made Platinum with 980 SCs! I'd actually intentionally left myself short 20 SCs so I could pull the trigger just before a large bout of domestics and internationals in August but c'est la vie! :p
It's actually good timing in another way as my gold baggage tag was ripped off on a flight over the weekend :/

Thanks to AFF and all the contributors to the spreadsheet for helping get me over the line! Red->Gold->Plat in 6 months!

I made WP for the first time this week too. Without the status run spreadsheet I wouldnt have had a hope in hell!

Im mainly doing it for the soft landing down to SG next year as I won't be flying as much over the next 12 months as I have over the previous 12.

Now considering how best to use my comp upgrades with my 2-4-1 CC offer. I know the A330 to PER is the best use but I have absolutely no reason to go there and would expect to absolutely haemorrhage money while Im there because it is so expensive which would reduce the effectiveness of my comp upgrades.

CNS is out favourite place in Australia and we're looking to take our 4th trip in 6 years there next year. We are a big, big fan of the MEL-CNS direct daily flights so will prob use the comp upgrades on them.

I wish you could use them for short-haul intl!

We also find ourselves with more VFF points than we know what to do with so also considering how to burn them (obviously the comp upgrades wont use any points)

Very similar thoughts to me, I just don't have heaps of VFF points.. I prefer to warehouse them with Amex. MEL-CNS for a holiday doesn't sound bad, it's just getting a low-enough flexi price to make it worthwhile.

I think it's a waste of money to go somewhere you dont want to go that is v expensive just because you can travel there in style (ie PER). I think for little 1 hour hops J is a bit of a waste for SG or WP - the only things that are different are the bigger seat and better meal - you barely notice it on a short flight.

MEL-CNS is about 3:20 from memory. Im disappointed its just the standard 1 tray meal they serve on MEL-ADL given the flight length but to me it's a more sensible use of a free upgrade because you have much more time to experience it all. They (foolishly) charge $1000+ pp each way in J on this route. From memory flexi is about $300 each pp each way so with 2-4-1 it would only be $300 pp return in J which to me is great value.

Are there any other sensible uses for the comp upgrade from MEL apart from PER? Would you go there if you didn't want to just to experience the product?
