We are booked on a QF1474 (Dash-8) from CBR to SYD in Economy on a ticket that then includes a number of international flights in Business (a one-world classic award booking). We are FF members, obviously.

What baggage rules apply to us on that initial flight of our trip: the rather limited domestic Dash-8 ones (e.g. one checked bag of 16kg), or the QF International Business class limits?

Thank you, Joseph

Got to chat with Qantas Support eventually and learned that check-in limit is 40kg for each bag (that is onward Business ticket overrides Dash8 limit) but cabin bag is limited to one piece of 7kg and 105cm dimensions (that is Dash8 limit prevails). Hope that's correct!

Under IATA resolution 302 then being on the one ticket then the allowance for the SYD-xx_ should apply (depends on your "journey").

SYD-xx_ in our case is SYD-HKG-PVG on CX110/KA808, later PVG-LHR on BA168, and more... Is that a qualifying "journey", I wonder.

Re: QF luggage allowance on CBR-SYD flight with onward J class booking

Assuming PVG is a stopover then that is two journies through to LHR and each journey can have its own allowance.

For the ex CBR Journey, your "Most Significant Carrier" is that from SYD to HKG so the baggage allowance for CX110 is what applies for CBR-xSYD-xHKG-PVG.

40kg? The maximum weight allowed per bag is never any more than 32kg as baggage handlers aren't allowed to lift bags that are heavier than that. Do you mean per passenger?

That was my question also to the Qantas online chat person - the reply was "no, per bag".

Now, I wonder whether that lack of knowledge/understanding also extended to the information I was given in regard to carry-on limits (i.e. that it could only be one bag of 7kg), which clearly goes against compliance with the IATA ruling.

Or, does Qantas impose these special restrictions out of necessity because of the limitation of the aircraft used on the CBR-SYD run (the Dash8)? They do spell out these exceptions on their luggage information web page: https://www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/baggage/carry-on-baggage.html?

The knowledge of the online chat staff when it comes to things like checked luggage for a multi carrier journey tends to be rather lacking.

Generally you get better information from the check-in staff at the airport as they have come across these type of things before.

Carry-on baggage does not really come under IATA302.

Dash8 baggage allowances for checked bags are exactly the same as for mainline QF flights the only exception being for Lord Howe Island (LDH) where you can only have 14 kilos of checked luggage pp due to weight restrictions on those flights.

Carry on baggage is only one piece up to 7 kilos however you can gate check a second item as premium hand luggage which you give to the gate agent when boarding and it's put in the aircraft hold and given back to you on the tarmac when you arrive. As you need to take your item through the security screening point make sure any sharps etc tools, knives, scissors etc are packed in your checked suitcases.

If you're on mainline domestic or international flights then two items of carry on luggage are permitted.

When the weight allowance applies to your booking eg to Asia/Europe or in your case 40 kilos the number of pieces is irrelevant eg if there are two adults you get a total weight of 80 kilos so your bags can be in the form of 4 x 20 kg, 8 x 10 kgs etc as long as no single item exceeds 32 kilos which is an OH&S requirement.

Looks like the work experience kids have infiltrated the chat room.

Re: Rumour:[Denied by RR] Qantas to ban JQ SYD-MEL pax from F lounges & send to J lou

and I'll throw it out there again :) .... qantas call centre staff are excellent.... for fares and ticketing. That's what they specialise in. Anything else, baggage, visas, seating... come to the experts! (as for on line chat... not exactly sure of their speciality)

Depends on the airline though - some place piece limitations even when a weight allowance applies. Relevant here for the OP, as CX is one of them. 8 x 10kgs would not be an option for 2 J Pax, as the limit is 40Kg and 2 pieces per pax. Sapphire or Emerald status grants extra weight and an extra piece.
