I am new to this forum :)

Family member may travel once or twice per year overseas. Not interested in status but with award flights to Asia return or to Canada departing from NZ.

I am thinking that Star Alliance might be a bit better and given that AirNZ has access to Grab-a-seats. This person would use grab-a-seat or standard so called $2,000 fares to Asia or the likes of $2500 to Canada.

It looks like BMI comes out at top at 50,000pts required for a Asian return flight.

Air Canada is pretty good as well needing 60,000. Shorter point span but 2% can be gifted to a charity to be active.
SIA is equal but they have a shorter lifespan of the points.

I like to know your views and in particular would the grab-a-seat fares from AirNZ be credited as discounted economy for any of the Star Alliance carriers??

Cheers.

Welcome to AFF :)

It would seem to very few if any G-A-S NZ fares will credit

/Mile's to any Star Alliance carrier, Air NZ included.

If you have one of the new one-smart cards you can purchase

's.

Yeah .. thanks.
In terms of purchasing Airpoints that would be for me, my mother would have to sign up to a Airpoints membership and pay the joining fee and pay a annual fee if she did not travel yearly.

In 2012 February, AirNZ will get airpoints for G-A-S tickets. But not much. A return trip to Asia gets 50. So for a G-A-S ticket $899 perhaps divided by 50 = 18 I think you need bought/spent before getting one back. Even more so if one wanted a so called $2,000 std fare. Mind you a std fare only gets 80 return. So $899/80 = 11 trips required. Or 25 for a $2000 ticket.

I had a wee think and do you think Air Canada would be a good choice for rewrad tickets? I am thinking that AirNZ would just be too hard to get freebies now.

Air Canada - 60,000M needed for a return ticket. Provided you don't get the cheapest fares, Air Canada gives you 1pt per 1M flown. BMI is better at 50,000M required but she does not go to Europe.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
