Hi guys,

Fairly simple question re the benefit plats/golds receive in being able to upgrade Y to Y+ or J on LAX/AUH services.
Are plats/golds able to upgrade a non-member if the plat/gold member is not travelling? I know you can upgrade non-members when you are travelling on the same service with the non-member, but curious if you can do this when you are not travelling with the non-member.

Eg. I am a plat, if say my mum booked Y fare from SYD-LAX (in correct fare bucket), would I be able to upgrade her using my platinum benefit? Or do I have to be travelling/on the same PNR for this to occur.

Thanks for the help

I've done it before when travelling on the same flight but a different PNR, though there was a personal story to go along with the request that may / may not have helped. Don't know whether it'd be allowed if you weren't travelling at all; I'd call and ask.

If you are referring to the 4 complimentary upgrades for being platinum then they can't be used on international flights otherwise I'm not sure what you mean by platinum benefit.

I'm referring to the "UpgradeMe Points - International Long Haul Flights to Los Angeles and Abu Dhabi" benefit which is only available to gold or platinum FFs.

I have used it multiple times for myself when I'm travelling and for non-members travelling with me.

However I want to know if I can upgrade a non-member (be it family, friend etc) when I am not travelling i.e. I call up the plat desk and upgrade the non-member.

A call to velocity might be the best way to answer this.

Right, understood. You can only try but my experience of trying to pass platinum benefits to family when not flying has never met with success. Any time I fly the kids get all the same options as me and even when on different PNRs they have linked them and given the same benefits. If you are not travelling at all I doubt you will have any joy but best of luck all the same.

Taking a stab here, but I'd say if you called the plat line to upgrade using your own points, you could probably upgrade anyone you like.

I halfed hoped/thought this may be the case.
will give them a call and report back!
