Hi everyone, just checking on my daughters flights for MEL - LAX and return and just noticed that Qantas have changed their return flight from QF94 to QF96, do they just change these without even telling us?

Went to check on the seating and that had all changed too.

Why would they change the flight without telling us?

How was this booked? Direct with Qantas or via a TA?

We booked direct with Qantas on the website, and it was booked in February. It was still QF94 a couple of days ago, so they have just changed it recently.

I notice that if we try and book the same trip there is no availability at all online, very odd.

#EDIT#

I asked them in the chat what had happened and they said there may have been issues with the aircraft. They asked if we would like to go back to QF94, so all good now and back to where we started with no real explanation as to why that changed. Hopefully it won't change again

Seems to be bookable on Qantas.com (USA) as a one-way (These are USD):

Maybe they are planning on cancelling QF94 that day?

It would still be interesting to know why they did it or rather who did it.

Yes, the chat rep seemed to be confused also. I guess "aircraft problems" are probably a standard answer instead of "I don't know"

QF96 is the 747, seems to be the school holidays service. It doesn't operate at other times.

QF96 schedule. (Qantas flight: Los Angeles -> Melbourne)

Who knows maybe they are needing to fill that one up.... I'll be certainly keeping a check on it in case they do it again.

is it possible that QF had overbooked QF94, but then later had some definite cancellations (thus allowing you to move 'back' to QF94 from QF96?)

I would keep monitoring your flight... whoever decided to take you off it in the first place may do the same thing again when they next review the flight.

It was booked in January this year so I doubt it was because of overbooking.

Yes, will certainly be keeping an eye on it.

Just because you booked in January, doesn't mean the flight can't overbooked. Though based on the loadings, it doesn't appear to be (the premium cabins on 94 do appear to be quite full though).

Interestingly the 747 is slightly quicker than the 380.

Which it is. In the overall scheme of things, about .01 mach, but if you want to get really serious, and go fast (and pre RVSM), a 747 has a max of .92 versus .89. for the 380. In reality neither speed is 'real', in that the 747 hasn't got enough power to achieve .92 in most cases, and the fuel flow is horrific anyway, and the 380's mother gets unhappy above .87.
