So it is supposedly a city yet was awarded best town, hmmmn

Genuine towns vying for the title might be feeling ripped off.

Now if one of us mainlanders dared call Launnie a town (considering it is half the population of my LGA) we would be flamed by the Tasmanians here.

Tomorrow I will take a photo of one of the restaurants in Town.it proclaims it is in Lonnie.
The name is pronounced Lonceston by the locals. When i first worked here I was told I was wrong pronouncing it Lawnceston as the place in Cornwall is pronounced.

The place with the sign is probably run by a Mainlander!!

The place in Cornwall is pronounced something like Lawn-ston. I probably shouldn't say what we called it at uni - Loncesspit.

FWIW, the current Lord Hobart (who visits from time to time) pronounces his name something like 'Hobbit'. I don't think that'll catch on here.

On my first trip to the deep southern climes below lat 40deg south in 1980, I was told by the locals it was Lonnie, certainly never Lawn-ie. I've stuck with that.

And on a radio interview with singer from the US, she was excited to have performed in Hob-Art, which had the announcers in fits.
 
Ah Launny - my second home for 6mths Jan 1995 to June 1995 - what tales we could tell - the GC was Novotel then - what tales we could tell - had the local cops on speed dial and the divvy vans became our own personal taxis - ah the tales we could tell - Jason who owned that nightclub upstairs further up Cameron St from Novatel - what tales we could tell

Remember Fi & Me? Went there plastered one night and ordered some tomato concoction for an entree - I just remember staring down at 1 whole oversized tomato sitting apon a plate - oh so lonely - any wonder it went bust

God I love that town 👍 The sheer genuineness of the unadulterated population was just the best
