I thought it would be sentimental to fly on the last ever Qantas domestic NZ flight before being changed to Jetstar. QF2728 Wellington to Auckland supposedly departing at 7.30pm
There was an atmosphere in the Wellington lounge with lots of people discussing the last flight and how Jetstar will perform.
At 7.30 we got the call in the lounge to proceed to boarding. Got to gate and nothing happening. We waited another 15 min before being allowed to board. So far, just another usual QF flight running 30min late.
Greeted by QF staff with and then had announcement s syaing that this was final QF NZ flight. A full bar was operating but to celebrate qantas qas offering bubbly. I am not a fan of sweet Lindauer, and asked for a red wine. It turned out that the ground staff had packed the bubbly but forgot to load the rest of the alcohol. All in all a typical Qantas flight. But I will miss them.
So Qantas have left NZ domestic routes, altered NZ-USA-NZ timetables and are up against very aggressive fares transtasman by Air NZ with in seat TVs and special seating for gold passengers and Emirates with the A380. I wonder how long it will be before Qantas stop the transTasman and give that to Jetstar, and then the last few Qantas gold and plat from NZ will have very little chance of retaining status.
