We are considering a 3 or 4 week trip to South America early next year. As it's our first to this part of the world, we think we will stick to the big name places - Rio, Buenos Aires, Lima, and (because it seems all flights go through there) Santiago. With some side trips, of course.

The "South America Pass" looks interesting, but the website is poor.

My questions:

  1. Can you book this pass in better than economy class? If so, how?
  2. Any advice on what order to visit these cities for best travel?
  3. Should I consider using a travel agent for bookings? Sorry if that causes conniptions in the ranks!

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,

Brett

Hi Brett

Yes, the question re TA will likely cause a diversity of opinions to arise ;) .

I'm a strong believer in TAs, especially for complicated itineraries or times where, like here, you aren't sure of the rules or options. And I mean a good TA, not a bucket shop like Flight Centre. I can PM you the name of mine if you like.

I think the order of visit isn't a big factor - most likely be determined by flight scheduling and maybe on miles in a particular air pass category (ie you may need to minimise miles flown to fit into a cheaper band). When I visited those 4 cities, (a while ago) - I did a simple clockwise loop starting in Buenos Aires, but on mixed airlines.
