I thought I was doing something wrong. I searched the menu again and again. I gave up and read the inflight magazine

Only 12 movie options available on the beautiful new 16" screen I'm front of my J seat? Only one of these of slight interest to me.

Not just a problem on transcon flights, but very frequent flyers are going to run out of things to watch very quickly.

Surely loading 1000s of hours of content is fairly easy, plenty of airlines do it and QF own licences for their international fleet.

...back to downloading podcasts for my return flight.

I didn't realise this was a problem with the new (Panasonic?) setup. I have become used to the same old stuff on the 737s (including Trans-Tasman). On the only couple of flights I've had with the new IFE I was pleased to see a whole lot more music options - didn't really bother with movies.

Yeah, not much point watching a movie SYD-MEL but a 4 hour transcon I'd get sick of "the Big Bang theory" pretty fast. I prefer day flights, so sleeping is not really a great option (even with lie flat).

Do the A330s international have the same entertainment?

I suspect you only looked at the content on the "Home" screen which lists new releases. You need to delve into the "Q Menu" beside the home button at the top left. The full set of entertainment options will then be displayed.

When I first played with the new system, I did think that it could be made clearer that "Home" only displayed a subset of entertainment.

They have more than that for sure.

One other option is each seat has a limited range of titles loaded directly which becomes active if there is a failure of the main server or the comms to the seat.

On the shorter domestic flights I view the first half of a movie on the outward flight and the second half on the return flight. With gate to gate viewing it is sometimes possible to watch an entire shorter (90 minutes) movie on the one flight.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
