A very short quick trip report as I'm pressed for time.
Had to go to Torrance in California for two days last week for training on some new equipment. Torrance is about 13km SSE from LAX airport, and is part residential, part corporate headquaters for a lot of medium sized U.S. companies.
Flew over in economy on the first of the new evening departures for QF95 - 10.40pm departure out of Melbourne, 7pm arrival into LAX. The food on the Dreamliner was absolutely excellent I thought, crew did a great job throughout the flight, I don't think we heard a word though from the coughpit for the entire flight which seemed odd. The only drawback of the entire flight was the seats in Y - the seat cushion is like a rock - and that is being kind to it! I couldn't get comfortable at all for the entire flight.
Arrived into LAX on time, and then it was the usual horrific LAX arrival experience - nearly three hours to get through customs and immigration even though I only had carry on luggage. I was about ready to choke someone by the time I got out of the hotel. Took taxi to hotel - had to wait about 20 mins in the queue for a cab.
Stayed at the Staybridge Suites Torrance/Redondo on Prairie Avenue. Thought that this place was very good, staff friendly and helpful, breakfast included in the rate. Has a free shuttle that runs every two hours to anywhere within a three mile radius.
Booked a SuperShuttle to get from the training venue back to LAX, was the only person on this service which was probably just as well as the driver didn't have a clue where he was going! Drove around in lots of circles until we eventually got onto a freeway.
Many thanks to the gentleman who guested me into the QF club so as I could grab a badly needed shower - much appreciated mate! Hoping to regain gold status in the next 12 months.
QF94 on the A380 back to Melbourne. Used points for an upgrade to Y+, and was allocated an exit row window seat. Everyone was on board in plenty of time, but was about 10-15 minutes late departing due to delays getting the cans on board. Took off, and about three minutes after wheels up I fell asleep for a good nine hours - crew told me later that they tried to wake me for the dinner service but despite their best efforts I was completely out to it. Crew did a great job again, great flight, slowed down by ATC so landed about 25 minutes after scheduled time. Through immigration and customs pretty quickly - trip over.
