it appears that YVR is expensive to leave from for a quick status run - I am there in april and the other trips scheduled are direct with a baby so I cant be seen to be waffling. I had it all planned to do the SJU from LAS but that has now gone down the gurgler (I was proud of myself - I got it to work) - I think because the instructions from you all were of the KISS method. I have tried and tried and I cant get anything like the SC for $'s as that example. 1 will have 2 days on my own and need 220 for gold although estatic if I can go Platinum but have to start and finish in YVR. I can do it if I have a recipe - what am I not doing?

Starting/finishing YUP runs outside the .us is generally not good value. Additionally, by starting / finishing in .ca you will be in J for the to/from .ca legs, diminishing the value yet again.
You would be better off finding your way down to SEA cheaply and booking the YUP run from there.

Or even looking at SEA-LAX-SFO (or SEA-SFO-LAX) on AS in F (booked on the AA Code). Can be quite reasonable value and an easy run. Return should net 300 SC

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Just checked most Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays for April & May and every day has $425 fares

Make sure you view all, and only look at the via LAX options (the price of the DFW routing is scary)

UPDATE back in Oz

- missed out on QFPlatinum due to cancellations. but in the big scheme of things all can be done next time.

-US customs & immigration need more staff! just to let you know,
i bought 2 litres of alcohol (~$20 Canadian club 100%) & a makeup liquid in YVR duty free & shoplady said i'd have to check it in at LAX

- & i agreed to look into it

when i got to LAX iexited AS flight at gate 65b and turned left going past ruby?s coffe shop andthere at gate 64a is sign saying international transfer shuttles &attendant asks for boarding pass and you wait for shuttle & it takes youacross tarmac to AA departure gates 44 where you recheck in with Qantas deskjust on your right as you walk in. I asked about my duty free and they said as I was airside it wasn't a problem . you can ask for different seats etc. just double check that the FF membership is the one you want to earn points on. then you wait for next Qantas shuttlebus which will take you acrosstarmac to different terminal (TB) where you get dropped off at gate 144. Thenyou (long) walk to lounges- you are always inside secure area so you never need to gothrough security again. and i didn’t have to recheck my alcohol and OW lounge had no problem with my AA 30 day membership (that's on the AA forum).

Hope that is helpful to anyone else transiting. also CREDITED QF points for AS flight in economy with QF flight number

What were the cancellations and what/how ere you rerouted.

You may be able to get those precious SC's by submitting a request to QFF asking for "Original Routing Credit"or "ORC".

Did your AC 30-day membership get you into AC in T4 or OW Lounge in TBIT?

I only went into OW at TBIT - AA told me previously and same as on this site - it is a membership (regardless that it was short term) i didn't use T4 even though i had such a long transit time as I wanted to make sure I got chair and shower - and though there were pax there for 2 QF flight to syd & 1 to melb & definitely a CX & BA flight to HKG & ? - there was plenty of room

OK I understand now. You were leaving LAX flying QF (and had arrived on AS).

Hi Serfty, AA cancelled transaction for me as with the cancelled flight they tried to reroute with lots of suggestions for me (fly to this city -hire car etc) but because I only had the 24hrs to complete the flights and then back to get all the connecting flights back to YVR with the family I didn't risk it -- I am happy to do it all again soon - BUT I am going to find a iphone sim card for US & Can & Europe -so will search FF to find that recommendation

We had a positive experience using Go-sim in US/Europe as a replacement SIM card and the costs were substantially below phone costs on previous trips. We used it on a Samsung but I believe Iphone products are now catered for.

well that does make it difficult for ORC.

However, depending on whether you reached your destination or not, you may be able to get a refund of your fares from AA under "Trip In Vain" provisions.
