I am probably being a complete nong, but every single flight I have looked at via my singapore/krisflyer login, be it 'using points' or even just a basic flight check seems to hit the big 'I'm sorry, computer says no' response.

I just booked the leg I want directly on Lufthansa's site. So, I know it services the route, and I know it has my singapore number because its on the e-ticket.. So this looks like a classic "oh, yea, we better make our web service work with star alliance .. one day .. maybe" type thing.

I've been trying repeatedly the last 4 weeks btw. Flights from FRA, LHR, CDG, AMS, ATH (and a range of betweens).

Nada..

waddididowrong?

(for example, look for ATH-FRA on Lufthansa, May 30)

For Star Alliance award redemptions, you can only do it via call centre. You can only book Singapore Air and Silk Air (subsidiary) online.

There. I knew I was being a complete nong.

Mind you, so was the web designer for SIA. (sigh)

Back to the drawing board.

On the positive note, Krisflyer call centre is generally pretty good to deal with Star Alliance bookings. Hold times is generally pretty good.

You can join up with ANA frequent flyer program and use that to find award flights on *A carriers. There is a knack to this, as they don't technically allow you to directly search for the flights with a 0 points balance, but there is a backdoor way.

What you do is:

1. Sign up
2. Log in
3. Search for a ANA flight redemption between LA and Tokyo (for example - doesnt need to be the same route as your looking for)
4. When you get the search results, scroll down and select "Search on Star Alliance partners"
5. This will then produce a new set of results
6. [Im just writing this from memory so excuse me if this is wrong] Click on 'Modify flights'
7. You get a fresh search screen and you can enter your correct paramaters to search for star alliance flights.

Or something like that.

I'm also told Air Canada also has a similar search facility.

Thanks

Hayden

Air Canada Aeroplan is much easier as you don't even need to be a member to search. But ANA tool is better for highly customised routes and timings if you know your geography well.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

PS... The SQ call centre are quite good, though its a 50/50 chance that you will get someone whose understanding of english OR speaking of english is poor - so it's luck of the draw. Some are experienced and some are not - you will soon know what I mean when you start using them a lot for your awards

Must say United (the old Continental site is also pretty good). For me United for "simple routings" and ANA for complicated is the way to go but I do tend to use Aeroplan to verify.

Does the new united website still work properly as it moved to CO IT platform? After merger between UA and CO there is nothing but complaints/flames/rants at FT forum.
