i note a few people talking about loosing sc when they go to next tier. i currently have over 1200 and will have around 1600 by the end of this trip but am yet plat as need three more sectors to fly, will have that when we get home along with all those beautiful sc lol.
so when i get home and i change over to plat do my status credits still stay the same and just keep dropping off as they expire or does it clear the lot and rest me back to 0? kinda confused and hoping not to loose them all.

traceyy, I have never flown Virgin, but I suspect the basics are the same with any airline. They all work on a member year - ie a calendar year for each member that is based on when they joined. If, during YOUR calendar year, you amass sufficient status points, you get upgraded to whatever new status level those SC entitle you to. The SC do not disappear at that point. They get reset to zero at the end of your calendar year. Most airlines, if you amass sufficient SC, will bump you up to the new higher status immediately, and also for your next membership year. (some foreign airlines do it for two years)

So if this is correct with Virgin, the day you have gained enough SC you get bumped up a level, and this stays for another year, even if you stop flying them. And on your anniversary date, yes, your SC will be wiped to zero, but you do not lose the status unless you fail to gain sufficient in the next year.

status credits still stay the same and just keep dropping off as they expire.

Status credits last 12 months from the date they are issued. Once you attain Platinum, you stay Platinum for around 13 months, regardless of how your SC balance accrues or dwindles.

Unlike QF, VA do not have a fixed 'calendar year'. From the moment you're upgraded to a new status, you start one year of holding that status; and your retain count starts then too.

So unfortunately all of those excess credits won't count toward your retain.

so if they are not going to count toward retaining can i gift a gold membership to my husband, how does it all work where the sc wont go to waste as such? i am doing another trip to la in feb but alone so was hoping between that trip and maybe a status run somewhere i can keep plat for another year after as i dont intend to travel too much in the next 12 months but dont want to loose plat

Your total status credits will remain the same as they are however your 800 status credits needed to maintain only starts from the day u qualify for platinum. So in other words any status credits u currently have will not count towards maintaining.

For example on myvelocity it shows me as still having 1480 SC but I require another 450 SC to maintain platinum (I messed up my family pooling and wasted 120SC on the PE flight that qualified me for platinum)

Gifting gold/platinum only comes into play after maintaining platinum. So u still need to earn the 800 to maintain and then 500 on top of that.

geez ive got my work cut out then lol..... should still be ok with earning what i need to hit plat again. if i had of known all this before then i would not have had my hubby and daughter pool all their sc to me and he could have got himself gold. in fact if i cancel family pooling now and set it up to him he would qualify for gold yes? as there are three of us returning from the usa in a few days and that would prob be close enough for him to hit target. would that work?

Yes I'd pool all SC to him immediately. He will at least get gold that way as well. Remember any changes to family pooling take effect from the following day!

in actual fact if anyone is familiar with sc there are three of us flying back from nyc will be 3 sep sectors as we are going nyc - la - bris - melb (all on freedom fares). im thinking if all 3 are pooling to him that will be enough or certainly very close to getting him gold yes? is there a limit on the amount of times you can change family pooling options?

Got it sorted Have cancelled pooling to myself started pooling to my husband, worked out we should get 450 status credits for the trip home it only leaves and 50 to earn Which we should be able to get via Coles/flybuys pretty quickly and he’ll have gold. Saves all the status credits going to waste.
