Reports that a Jetstar 787 has diverted to Guam whilst enroute from Tokyo to the Gold Coast. Possible low oil pressure in 1 engine. 320 passengers overnighting in that US island territory.

Yes and the aircraft speed as displayed by FR24 suggests one engine reduced to idle or at least reduced thrust. The aircraft speed went from 470kts to 300kts. Some news outlets reporting a engine shutdown - they would know of course!

And Jetstar is saying it was not a emergency. Some would assert that a 2 engine plane with an inoperative engine is an emergency.


JQ has visited GUM in the past with an A330 VH-EBF JQ20 visiting there in June 2009 after flight crew extinguished a coughpit (windscreen) fire.
Interestingly clearance to land (JQ20) was not forthcoming with a "PAN" call until the crew put out a "MAYDAY". Also the charts for GUM was in a compartment not in direct access to the 1st and 2nd pilots. Maybe in 2009 charts were not yet electronic?

Many a/c flight manuals do not define a single engine out as an emergency. Certainly abnormal and requiring a diversion but not an emergency.
