I will be travelling on JQ to SIN from SYD via DRW. Booking JQ flights via their website only has 75mins between arriving and departing - is this achievable? Will both boarding passes be issued at SYD? Will luggage have to be collected and re-checked in?

Ok, without knowing the flight number(s) its hard to tell if its a connecting flight or not.

As a rule of thumb, JQ do not provide connecting flights, and consequently baggage transfer unless explicitly denoted on your itinerary. I would assume by default you'll have to collect your luggage at DRW and re-check-in before crossing into the International area.

Unless you check in online or you have connecting flights, you are unlikely to receive both boarding passes at SYD.

In terms of connection time, I've looked up the JQ flight connections table and there's no entry for DRW.

The average minimum connection time on JQ Domestic to JQ International from this table is 90min, so the 75 minutes you have might be cutting it quite fine.

My personal recommendation is that you contact JQ's call centre to confirm the information specific to your needs - because I suspect you may need to change to earlier/later flights if available.

If it is one of the JQi to JQi connections that occur in the Darwin hub, then I imagine it is ok.

AV8,

As the others have pointed out, without definite flight numbers all people can do is take an educated guess on your behalf. :(

AV8 please advise actual flight numbers and dates your're booked - that way we'll know for sure.

I'm guessing you're on JQ73 SYD/DRW (goes on to SGN) then disembarking in DRW connecting on JQ61 (ex MEL) DRW/SIN? I wouldn't bother with calling JQ call centres as they have precious little idea of what goes on at airports. If you need to know what goes on at the airport the best people to speak to are the staff at the airport.

As JQ in SYD are checking you in your luggage should be through checked all the way to SIN and I expect both boarding passes would be issued in SYD. I've never seen pax having to collect their bag outbound. Even pax flying domestically into DRW on QF have their bags through checked on to JQ international flights but not all have the intl JQ boarding pass ex DRW but that's no big deal. It depends what city they've come from.

Worst case scenario if you only get first boarding pass, on arrival in DRW make your way down the escalators then turn right and go to the JQ Service Desk at counter 16 to get your boarding pass then head back up the escalators & turn right for customs & the international departures area.

Everyone on your flight JQ61 DRW/SIN will need to clear outbound customs in DRW irrespective of whether they joined that flight is MEL or they've come from another city like you & are changing flights in DRW. If purchasing duty free you would be buying it from JR Duty Free in DRW.

All JQ flights BNE/DRW/DPS or MEL/DRW/SIN or SYD/DRW/SGN operate as a domestic flight from the southern capital into DRW then become an international flight ex DRW. Remember you would checkin at T2 in SYD the normal domestic terminal for JQ domestic flights not SYD international terminal.

The only exception is JQ57 CNS/DRW/SIN & vv which is a through international flight so even if flying CNS/DRW only the LAGS screening would apply.

If you are returning through DRW also in Asia although your bag may be checked through to your final destination eg SIN/DRW/SYD JQ58/JQ74 you must clear customs with your bag in DRW then drop your bag off at the JQ international bag drop queue before heading upstairs again where your flight continues down south as a domestic flight and therefore arrive at T2 the JQ domestic terminal.

Don't worry I'm sure things will work out fine.

Have a great trip.

Cheers

Oz

Thanks for your feedback - My Flight details are JQ75 (SYD-DRW) followed by JQ61 (DRW-SIN) 75mins later. Flights have been booked via JQ website as 1st leg of a return ticket.

I asked Skystar Ground Handling who do the checkin for JQ and they said that you should get both boarding passes when you checkin at SYD (Terminal 2 domestic) and your baggage will be through checked to SIN.

It's always a good idea to double check your booking on the JQ website for any changes to flight timings etc in the event of any schedule changes.

When you arrive at DRW you will most likely enter the terminal via gate 1, 3 or 4A so as you head towards the escalators turn left for outbound customs and immigration - there's a big yellow sign saying "international departures".

There's no need to go downstairs at all if you already have your DRW/SIN boarding pass with you.You will need to complete your green departure card for customs and immigration but I don't know if they have these at T2 where you checkin so you may need to do this in the customs area.

DRW would probably be the easiest airport in Oz to do the domestic to international connection IMHO.

Ozbeachbabe - thanks for your feedback/advice - sounds like there may be even time for a quick visit to the QP if it is nearby and get 2 passes issued in SYD - I have plenty of the green departure cards. Thanks again.

ozbeachbabe,

Is what you're saying applicable to OOL as well? I'm flying JQ430 MEL-OOL then JQ11 OOL-NRT on the one booking in September. I've called the JQ Customer line but as you've said, they couldn't definitively tell me what I can expect at the airport, ie. whether I would be issued with both boarding passes at MEL domestic, and whether my luggage would be through checked to NRT. The reason I was wanting to confirm this is because I would like to use the OOL JQ lounge, however if I must collect and re-check in my luggage then I won't have enough time to make it worthwhile.

The other thing is that I've noted from the JQ Lounge T&C that as the Gold Coast Lounge is located through security in the domestic departure lounge at Gold
Coast Airport, it recommends "International passengers, including passengers travelling on a domestic flight departing from the international terminal, leave
Lounge approximately 45 minutes before boarding commences and arrive at the departure gate 40 minutes prior to departure."
