Interesting slant on the airline wars at present: "AUSTRALIA'S two biggest airlines, Qantas and Jetstar, made only $17 million between them in the second half - and all of that was earned by Qantas"

Read the the story here:

Has the article changed? I don't see anywhere in the article that JQ is not making money.

True. Sort of.
What the SMH quote you used did NOT say was that JQ was ACTUALLY making money.
All the quote says is that it is Qantas as a whole that is making money, not which bland name department within Qantas that was making the money.

The inference from the article is that QF made 17M in the last 6 months while JQ did not contribute to the profit, it was the quote I actually pulled and is further elaborated in the article:

"But its overall performance was only slightly worse than the flying operations of Qantas and Jetstar, which reaped just $17 million between them in the second half."

If you read the market analysis post the results call, Jetstars EBIT of $117M occurred in the first 6 months of the trading year and Jetstar has not had positive earnings in the softer second half according to the analysts. Put simply they are not making money in the leisure sector.

Is your quote in the OP directly from the article? If so then the article has changed since you posted and it does not mention anywhere in the article whether it was Qantas or Jetstar that made the profit.

That was the first lines of the article, it indeed has been changed!

Poor reporting.

I have noticed that the quality of news reporting on the internet is extremely poor with the focus being on getting (any) news out there quickly and there is very minimal proof reading and decision making on quality.

I agree, such a change in content makes a big difference to the way its read!

As became the norm with cable news channels, being FIRST is more important than being RIGHT. The internet just takes it to a whole new level.....:evil:

Thank you very much for the extra info, markis.
:)
It makes things a lot clearer.
