The International Air Services Commission has granted Jetstar and V Australia capacity on the Fiji route.

Qantas Group was awarded 852 seats of capacity per week which must be used no later than April 2010.

V Australia has been awarded 907 seats of capacity per week, but the carrier must launch services by December 31 this year.

Interesting

Those figures for V don't seem very high, but if they are added to what DJ is already doing - thats pretty good.

Nothing like competition - but I fear it will drive FJ out of the market.

Dj has the best timings for Fiji, as FJ often resulted in overnights in Nadi each way, whereas with DJ you can get your island transfers done in the same day of travel.

I figure with the current DJ capacity + the new VA capacity VA will be able to fly 6 flights per week and JQ should be able to do 4.

Well VA might wanna get their skates on and get their schedules out asap if they are still committed. And guessing they would want to start no earlier than say 15th~December, they dont have long to fill a full 777.

Wont be surprised if they dont jump on this.

I would be very surprised if they did not!!

They are already running a 737 -800 on a daily service - and the loadings are pretty good. So a few extra seats on the 777 should not be hard to offload on a special.

The big reason why V wanted to do this - was this frees up a 737 for other routes - and utlizes the 777 during its long haitus on the Sydney Holding Pad.

Arrives from LAX at 730 am (roughly) and departs no earlier than 2030, so can easily do a SYD NAN SYD rotation.

Plus opens up the market to PE and Business.
