Might be a stuff up but on my Jetstar itinerary it stated the following:

For International StarClass passengers:
up to 30kg of baggage for carriage in the aircraft hold at no charge. Charges will apply to all Checked Baggage in excess
of the Checked Baggage allowance (ie. Above the 30kg allowance). Current charges can be found at Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd. The airline may not be able to carry your
excess baggage. No single item may exceed 32kg in weight. No item can exceed 2.9 meters for flights operated by an A330. The airline may refuse to carry any piece of

Baggage that does not comply with its policy. The airline may refuse to carry any piece of Baggage that does not comply with its

Despite the above, each passenger travelling on a JetSaver, JetFlex or International StarClass fare to or from the United States may check in up to 2 pieces of Baggage
for carriage in the aircraft hold at no additional charge. No single item may exceed 32kg in weight
. The maximum total combined dimension of the two pieces is 270cm

(106 inches), with no single item exceeding 158cm (62 inches)."

Has there been any news on this front.

Don't forget that JQ fly to Hawaii. That is one of the 50(something) states.

OT: just had a samshing flight to AKL on QF39 on a Jetconnect aircraft. Great crew and, yes, i did write a quick email to QF to pass on a 'pat on the back'.

We did Hawaii trip in late April/early May with Jetstar - all fine, no hitches. Re the baggage - oh happy day, you can take two very large and heavy bags on these flights. Very good for trip home with all that shopping you've done particularly at the Waikele outlets (see my comments previously about that).

In fact, at check in to come home there were several people with a large suitcase AND a surfboard. I asked the Jetstar check in staff re the status of the surfboard - counts as 1 bag ! Great situation - enjoy it while you can.

No, it's not new.

Airlines must allow for a 2 piece system of checked luggage for ANY travel itinerary including travel to/from/via the Americas or the USA (and it Territories), both of which HNL is part.

To illustrate this, here's Qantas' take on this issue: Flying with Us - Before You Travel - Baggage - Checked Baggage

And BA's: British Airways - Checked baggage

What is interesting is how these baggage allowances fit into the costing model for the airlines. Given that on the same aircraft (e.g. A 744) flying to LAX or HKG there are dramatically different checked baggage allowances it implies that there is no operational reason for the non-US restrictions (i.e. there must be enough weight and volume capacity) so it must be financial - the space may be filled with cargo or it must just be cheaper to deplane fewer bags. But then conversely flying to the US they must jack yup the ticket price to offset this.

I wonder if an airline oculd offer a discount flying to the US if you only have one bag...

Interestingly, this same topic appeared under the "Tips and Rumours" section of the Crikey(.com.au) daily email, suggesting that it's a big deal that Jetstar might fly to the U.S..

Coincidence?

But they already DO fly to the U.S.
