Ok, This might not amount to anything, but Jetstar left off a key condition for some advertised flights today in the Sun Tele. (Pg 25 Travel Section)

Bali from $439 / Hawaii from $439. (ex Sydney)

What they left out of the terms and conditions were that these are one way flights. So an astute person would then call and insist they were return as the airline has not stipulated that they are NOT return flights.

With the new ACCC rulings, flights advertised must stipulate whether they are one way way or return as part of the conditions as well as include all fees and charges prepayable in Australia (except service fees which vary from agency group to agency group and agent to agent)

Its a minefield out there. For anyone who calls Jetstar (131 538) and they say - "its for one way flights" - ask them to point out where on the advert it states that.

Good luck

The airlines will get used to the new conditions with time, and consumers will benefit. In any case, this isn't a particularly attractive fare but thanks for posting. Did you contact them?

Only stumbled across it late tonight, will give em a bell tomorrow a.m - see how it fares.

Can,t say I have ever seen Jetstar (domestic or international) advertise a return flight.

If it was Qantas on the otherhand.

But I would have thought that (and guessing without having the paper)
Sydney TO

and FROM $xx_

may count for something

Good chance I've missed a thread, but can someone point me at this ACCC ruling?

What you also have to remember is all fares "are subject to availibility" and the call centre wont have a clue what has been advertised or not. Especially if you get through to malaysia. You can quote them ACCC rulings etc etc. And they wont even have a clue who the ACCC are!!

With regards to the new ACCC rulings, the price they advertise is the price we are to pay. So that means there should be a way of avoiding a Credit Card fee etc... Ie-Virgin have POLi, Tiger have $0 debit card, but what does Jetstar have that is free right up to departure? I understand their Bank Deposit requires 14day advance purchase? So is JQ in the wrong here?

This change was a change to a section of the Trade Practices Act. It does not say that credit card fees should be avoidable. It basically says that any components that are ascertainable at the time the offer is made should be included in a single offer price. As credit card fees are optional they do not need to be included in the stated price (and added on later).

However, this thread is about an alleged ACCC ruling that advertisements need to state whether airfares are one way or return. Is there someone here that can point to this ruling?

As for Jetstar, if there booking do not allow for avoiding a CC fee in the last week or two prior to flying, then the CC fee should be included in the single price.

Read into this what you will.

"Accurate price representations are not just good advertising practice. The Trade Practices Act 1974 (the TPA) requires that your advertising correctly represents the product for sale, including its price and any inclusions or exclusions. It applies equally to all types of travel—from a five-star luxury holiday to a budget backpacker travel package. This enables consumers to make informed purchasing decisions when making travel arrangements and purchasing a holiday, including the choice of upgrades, airfares, duration of the trip, any tours, transfers or other inclusions, fees, charges, terms and conditions—and the total price."

Correctly representing the product for sale to me means stating what the price includes - and as such whether it is a one way or return.

To make the presumption it is one way based on previous advertising is probably not the best course of action for Jetstar.

I'm not a legal eagle, but as a consumer I would expect the basic information. I checked all other adverts in the section for airfares and they do state whether they are one way or return.

I havent read the whole document so I hope I'm not being presumptious

Price advertising and the travel industry

I had alook into it and it seems to go like this. Bank Deposit is the way to get the all inclusive price for up to 2weeks before travel, while under 2 weeks to departure the Credit Card fee is waived. It would be great for them to start POLi, I find it really usefull these days.

But did you know that JQ do, do POLi.

they have been using it for about the past two-three weeks.

POLi is a unique payment method which enables people to pay directly from their existing Internet banking accounts. POLi basically automates the transaction payment process

You can find out more about POLi on their website at www.centricom.com
