"Jetstar launches Melbourne-Tokyo flights, axes Gold Coast-Osaka"

I guess at 10.5 hours flight time it's just a smidge too long for a one-frame, same-day turn-around (any delay would have a knock-on effect for days). I think 9 hours flights are an optimal time for a same-day turn-around.

Is this industry standard. My initial reaction was why oh why is the the schedule not a same day turn around?
For both this new JQ service as well as the QF SYD-NRT service. I guess 2.5 hours does not give the airline much of a buffer!

Is the SYD-ICN OZ and KE service same day turnaround?

What do you mean for OZ and KE? They fly to Sydney and they come back the same day, but by the time they get back a different aircraft would be operating the next flight to Sydney.

Looks like JQ has managed to do what QF can't do - operate a flight to and from Asia with further connections in mind. The arrival time in NRT in the morning allows for connections to pretty much everywhere else in Japan, and one can catch an early morning flight from somewhere in Japan to connect to the midday departure to MEL.

I see where you're coming from but there isnt many asian destinations I cant reach from Singapore with the 4pm arrival either

$299 each way promo fare not bad for May/June either.

Agreed!

Purchased my return Business max fare for May/June yesterday.

I think the launch fares whilst not an absolute bargain are still very good value for money.

The flight times may not suit everyone, but are very good for those who want to leave Melbourne late at night & utilise annual leave more effectively.

Anyone else bought a fare or thinking of heading to NRT on JQ's new MEL > NRT service?

Launch fares are always good. Mind you a few years ago, launch jq7 mel-sin was $99. Paid $200 at check in for star class upgrade (in those days earned sc's).

Then flight karma bit back by late arrival and tech engine issues delaying the 12pm departure till almost 8pm.

My payback was 11hrs of food and champagne in the first class lounge... Mind you still missed a day of scuba diving thanks to it.

I attempted to purchase business max fare last night but was presented with (on the business fare) a price (~$572), with the word 'Sale' below it and another price (~772 I think) below that.
Naturally I selected the $572, added a Mac bundle for $200, and did the same for the return. Total price $1545.
However when I clicked 'continue' the next screen appeared to re-add the max bundle plus a few smallish taxes and displayed a price approaching $2000!
Not sure what is happening here, and what price I should be expecting. Traveling today, no time to call them yet. I tried this 3 or 4 times with the sane outcome each time.
Interested to know what price you got (if not being too nosy).

Yes, I had the exact same issue booking the business max fare too.

I agree, that the fare should not change like it did when you go & book it, but $1500 for a return business max fare seems a bit too good to be true.

I notice that the cheaper business max fares were not available on Friday night departures, so I ended up booking a Friday night departure , & noticed that this was the same price as a Sunday night departure, it did cost me the $1956 .

For me a Friday night departure is a fair better use of my annual leave than a Sunday night departure.

This does get me a handy 280 SC , as a QF platinum will earn me a nice 25410 QFF Points, the fare is totally flexible in terms of all changes, & just a $50 fee for a total refund.

The Fare works out to be $6.98 per SC , which is not as good as some of those LOTFAP trips you hear about, but is pretty good for a fully paid fare, without sacrificing burning points.

So if the price does come down in the meantime you know what I'll be doing.

Is it worth it, yes, but only just. If the fare was a few hundred more than I would have probably have looked at a JASA via SYD. ( although I have a insignificant points balance for that atm).

I did have that Xmas $ 20 club Jetstar voucher that was recently sent out to use up too.

Thanks for that, I'll revisit tomorrow and consider my options. That $1545 fare was very attractive. :(
