This is a real proposition - why bother with building internal servers/networks that need to be maintained and licensed to MS (often) - why not just get everyone onto google apps to replace the MS office/Outlook suite and get everyone an internet connection only - via a fairly simple dumb terminal. Even inhouse apps can be hosted in the cloud.

The IT world is continuing to evolve and with some forward and innovative thinking the IT experience for users and providers could be cheaper, more secure and more enjoyable.

Looks like they've upgraded to 6 staff now...... also using Google Apps.

Jetstar Australia will give each employee up to $1650 to buy a computer of their choice under a new bring your own technology (BYOT) scheme, to be rolled out in the next three years. Chief information officer Stephen Tame said the airline had designed a virtual, corporate environment involving desktop management tool MokaFive and Google Apps. Staff on the BYOT scheme would receive a $1650 BYO device allowance, with the option of contributing towards the cost of a more expensive machine.

Set to fail. Consumers don't choose the right technology, they only go for what they find bright and shiny, their friends have, or the cheapest nastiest item and pocket the change.

To compare to something else, imagine if a corporate says "here is $1000. Buy a desk and chair". How many chairs would be suitable for the office and also meet wh&s requirements? How many strange requests to maintenance would there be?

I know a few places which have had a BYO tech policy. What they saved in IT project costs was completely eaten up (many times over) in IT support costs and lost time.
It's amazing how often simple instructions on what type of tech to buy are completely ignored, just at lunch time I had someone complaining to me how he "brought the item which the sales person recommended*, and yet it didn't work with our systems".

It might seem to some people that IT people love to say no a lot, and we never chose the coolest looking tech or the cheapest tech out there, but often it's with good reason.
