Jetstar considering to cancel DRW-CNS route

I can't find the article online but there was an interesting news piece in Today's Sunday Mail page 19.

Queensland could lose a vital international air service between Cairns and Darwin.

Qantas owned Jetstar is threatening to scrap its daily service between Singapore and Cairns via Darwin if legislation proposed by Independent South Australian goes ahead.
The changes would force Jetstar to pay its foreign crews the same rates as Australian staff would make the route unviable.



The biggest shock I can see from this legislation if it goes ahead is removal of the Jetstar International services between Sydney and Melbourne and reverse.

There is large number of domestic only passengers on this route which has a lot of foreign cabin crews operating the service.
 
Would it bite into Cathay pacific HKG-ADL-MEL route ?
Perhaps the pollies (or 1 pollie) in ADL will force all pax off in ADL so the aircraft flys empty to MEL
 
Is the CNS-DRW-SIN route operated by Jetstar Asia? or Jetstar Oz?

Can't see that they can make a foreign corporation pay Oz rates while they are here. Do they make SQ, EY, EK adopt Australian award rates as well?
 
Surely the issue is flying local traffic with domestic rights - which doesn't apply in the other examples in this thread?

I think that Jetstar is, most likely, making an empty threat. From an outsider's view, it looks like the route is a strong performer which will not sink or swim based on any change in crew costs. Demand on the route used to fill a daily 763 (CNS-DRW-SIN) in the pre-Jetstar days and there isn't much international competition out of CNS.

It didn't fill a 767, which is why it went to JQ, I am not fussed whether it goes or stays, for someone that often needs to jump from FNQ to DRW happy with QF link or the TSV JASA, until DJ put on an alternative.
 
The SIN-CNS route is a vital link for Europeans trying to get to Cairns, FNQ and the Great Barrier Reef. Large numbers of Europeans used to fly this route to prior to the loss of the direct service, and there are still a large number of European pax transiting through SIN on the via-DRW service, though significantly reduced due to its less-convenient factor. Many interested parties in CNS have been working very hard ever since its loss to get it restored. Unfortunately, this is where Airports are beholden to the whim of the airlines, unlike what the Airlines would have us believe when Airport-Airline Agreements are up for renewal.

While there are other CNS-DRW domestic direct services (and those via GOV) , the CNS-DRW-SIN route is an important link for bringing more International tourists to Cairns and Far North Queensland. It's vital for the tourism-based economy of CNS.

I dont think its that important, its operating at 1/3 capacity, with 2000 passengers a month from a total 6400 capacity, the rest are D stickers.
 
No doubt if Silkair or Scoot had the right equipment - they would look at direct SIN-CNS services, but I suspect that the CNS tourism market is still being massacred by the high AU$

Yes but it's a lot harder to market if you don't have available capacity to deliver.

There is more capacity on that route with QFlink than JQ, and a lot of pax do the DRW/ CNS double, so I don't think it's a great loss! Besides Gove needs more tourists, and you get two meals on the GOVE transit flights - bargain!

I will speak to the local tourism committees and suggest promote "why fly direct when you can connect" ;)

Only 100 of the 200 seats are not direct with QF link!
 
SQ, AO and QF have flown the route with 763/340 a/c directly. The problem with JQ is the 3.5 HOUR WAIT IN DRW!

So why are they not doing it now.....it does not make sense.
