I'm flying next week OOL to AKL and return. We are booked as a family of 4 but my wife needs to stay back and work and will now be joining in NZ via Air NZ and coming home a day early as well.

should i call JQ and tell them one passenger is not going to be flying or is it ok for her not to turn up at check in? will it have any affect on our flights (we are all on the same ticket)

Are you able to separate the bookings then cancel hers?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

What type of fare is it? The fare conditions will determine whether or not it is worth trying to get a refund.

Oh and welcome to AFF, hope you stay here.

it's a starter fare so there will be no refund. i'm more concerned about them cancelling the return leg for all of us if one is a no-show

and thanks for the welcome. i don't fly alot but i am a bit of an aviation nut

They will definitely cancel her return leg, but the remaining pax should be unaffected.

Given that is the case, why not call them and see if her ticket can be credited for future travel - worst case scenario they say say (and you’ve cost a phone call), best case scenario they let you change hers. It also allows them the opportunity to sell the additional seat rather than go out one seat empty. They may allow you to separate the booking and keep her return leg for a fee of some sort (how much versus purchasing another will be the question).

But you could conceivably show up at checkin with 3 pax and have no issues for the three of you as each pax has their own e-ticket so whilst the bookings are linked, the only pax affected will be the no-show.

Update on this:

i spoke to J* last ngiht and they removed my wife from the booking. we forfeited the fare (it was around $250) but they transferred her baggage allowance to one of our daughters (who didn't have a checked bag allowance as she was going to have cabin bags only). because of this we do feel we did come out somewhat ahead
