I've done a few searches and can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question, so perhaps one of the CX gurus can help me and some future travellers out!

Note: this is on the same ticket, same PNR, and I want to avoid any excess baggage fees.

My question:

I'm flying J on JAL SFO to HND then on JAL to HKG (transit in HND only.) I am just in transit in HKG as well to the CX MEL flight.

JAL's checked baggage allowance is 4 bags for a OWE (both me and wife) per person, 32 kg each. From what i can tell, CX is unlimited bags, but a 50kg total weight allowance for all bags combined.

While I don't think I'll check 128 kg of luggage each (ya, that'd be a LOT), I will likely have more than 50kg per person. So when I check in SFO, will they limit me to what CX limits are (as that's the lowest) or will they just adhere to their rules? I plan on checking whatever luggage we have right through to MEL and I don't think I'll need to see them until I get back here.

My guess: JAL's rules apply. JAL will apply their weight/piece restrictions only in SFO, so I can max it out if I want. OWE + J, probably get the benefit of the doubt either way. CX allowances won't be taken into account and they'll just ship my bags through to MEL.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks! It does indeed look like I'll be good with the JAL allowance.

Now I just gotta figure out how to use up that 128 kg per person allowance!
