Hi,
I am planning to travel to FRA in Aug and am keen to use the very competitive Y+ fare offered by JAL ($3030 return). It includes the overnight at the airport hotel at NRT and I believe lounge access. Of course it also has the benefit of earning QFF and SCs (fare type E). Has anyone flown with JAL in Y+ recently and can comment on the service etc?
While I will have to get to SYD from PER to join this flight it still offers a reasonably priced alternative to QF from PER to FRA where PE is not offered (and no doubt far more expensive - The Y fare is around $2900 at that time)
I guess the only issue is their current 'restructuring' and whether they will still be flying in Aug, the corporate TA has said that its business as usual at JAL for now but they will ask us to sign a waiver in case they go belly up :-|

I flew J on JAL back in Sept/Oct to Europe and the service was as good as any ive ever had.

The seats, while i didnt sit in them, looked really good.

As a TA myself, I wouldnt feel any hesitation in booking them for my own upcoming trips this year, theres no guarantees, but thats life.

I have booked JAL PE flights to Paris in September but have not been asked to to sign a waiver by our TA. :o

Only paid a deposit with the balance due at the end of this month.

Have you looked at other departure cities eg. ADL or MEL instead of SYD?

I can only see BNE as the other Australian departure city and no PE fares available from there...

BNE is the only other city JL service, but they operate older aircraft on that route.

JL usually have common rated fares with ADL/MEL etc which connect using QF, so you could conceivably book the ticket ex ADL and only pay for PER-ADL instead of PER-SYD, assuming you could be bothered.

I have just booked JL Y+ Syd - LHR for Mrs C and baby on 1 September. It was the only decent deal on a one way fare (coming back on award) for Y+ at $1850 plus taxes. QF / BA / V prices were close to low cost J fares on other carriers. With QF points and Y+ SC's it is a good option - the lounge access makes it a great option.

There was talk on AFF earlier this year re the future of JL so I was a little worried too, but booked this through our corporate TA and they say no worries. No waiver asked for, fare payable on 31 march. Maybe check your travel insurance covers bankruptcy?

As mentioned in another thread, the Japanese Government will make sure JAL keeps flying.

I would have no hesitation in booking with them and enjoy the times I have travelled with JAL.

Will book these flights today, I am looking forward to travelling a different route to FRA than the usual PER-SIN-FRA trip (which is always full, although that did result an op up to J last time, seat 2J!).
Have also read comments (here or FT) about bars/restaurants around the NRT airport hotel, so will look for those too

Thanks for putting it so simply!
I only paid about $30 more to fly QF Y from/to CBR (presumably taxes?). A great deal

I have booked the flights in PE for late August, I wonder whethger whether these flights will earn 130 SCs or 260 SCs. The E ticket states the booking class is Economy (E), farebasis EKSPEAU. I assume unless its booked as W or T it will earn economy SCs?

according to the earning table E class gets you PE SC's and 0.7 times miles.

According to mileage monkey:
SYD-NRT - 4871 miles
NRT-FRA - 5827 miles

So that should be 70SC (SYD-NRT) + 80SC (NRT-FRA) x 2 = 300SC
