In the next two weeks we will be flying in J on SIN-NRT on JAL (JL710, a 773 aircraft) and NRT-HKG on CX (CX501, a 330 aircraft). The JAL flight is an overnight flight (it was the only one that suited the schedule), while the CX flight is a daytime flight.

I've not flown these sectors before so I was wondering whether anyone has any opinions about what sort of hard and soft products to expect?

Which cabin?

The CX flight is likely to be a regional config (was on the few random days I checked on EF), so no AVOD and 2x2x2 in business class. When I did that route last year I took CX504 which was a morning departure form HKG to NRT on a 744, selected specifically for the new J config. But going the other direction its all regional config 773 or A330 for the morning and afternoon departures. The 744s only operate the evening departures.

Can't help too much with the JL flights.

Actually in in F or J on JL you probably get an old config overnight, but you may get lucky there is some now and intermediate config planes on this route. And ones there J has the intermediate seats and F has the old seats.
CX regional is ok, bit better than JL.

Food on both is good.

Like the SQ flight to say ICN that use mostly regional aircraft i think its a bit of a shame for an overnight service but thats life.

I have done SIN-NRT (744's and 777's) and SIN-KIX (767's) a few times in the last 18 months in J or F and also via HKG on CX. I don't have much preference unless you get the fancy new config from JL that it nice !

When i have flown JL710 overnight i have had a mix of old config 744's usually, but now its a 777 like JL719 on the way back has been you could be lucky with the new config. What dates i may be able to check EF to see if i can figure it out.

Just a word of warning with the CX leg. Make sure you have your contact details with them, as they cancelled a NRT-HKG leg on us less than 24 hours before departure. Those who had their mobile no.s with CX received a text msg at 11:05pm(5 minutes after the Tokyo office had shut, meaning an expensive call to the Hong Kong office) but those who had not found out at the airport that they were departing an hour later.

It will be a regional config more than likely, which is bearable for the flight, except in whY, where you are squashed in like sardines. The IFE is fine, and is like the Qantas loop system they had on their 743's before they were retired.

Service is normal CX service, so for such a short flight, you will be looked after if previous experiences is anything to go by.

J - it was in my post but I realise now that it isn't very clear. Sorry about that NM.

Thanks to all for your replies and thank you for the tip mannej. CX has already cancelled a flight on me on that sector - we were originally scheduled to fly NRT-HKG in the afternoon - but it happened a few weeks back so we had plenty of notice. They contacted my TA in that instance but I don't think she will have entered my mobile into the booking so I will ensure that she does that.
