J awards - indirect v direct awards and availability

Not sure whether anyone else has come across this issue but earlier this week I booked 2xJ awards for CBR - NRT via BNE. Preference was for just BNE to NRT however this wasn't available. Worked out OK as I am currently working in CBR.

Has anyone else come across mystery availability for indirect awards which aren't available as direct awards?

I believe this is to do with the "married segments" rule. I have seen this before - in my case I could see availability for LST-MEL-SYD but not the same flight from LST-MEL.
