Is this the end of EK (as we know it, at least)?

I am keen to see what others think about the situation EK finds itself in.... no domestic routes to operate so literally at the mercy of foreign governments around the world... also a fleet 100% composed of large jets (777 & 380). Surely this is going to hurt them in a BIG way. And if they start laying off their staff (whom are all foreign), how do those poor people get home to their own countries?

I wonder if US & Australian airlines etc will do better because we have such enormous domestic routes to operate. The US, especially, which makes up something like 50% (someone fact check that but it is a huge number) of all global air traffic just domestically...

You forget the bottomless pit that is the Emirati sovereign wealth.
Yes, but less than it used to be. They have introduced a VAT there about 12 months ago - first ever overt taxation of the general public. Still, I'm sure they will not stand by and see Emirates fail.

Perhaps it will be merged with Etihad and downsized.
Now that I would love love love to see. My son lives in the UAE and since the scale back of Qantas/Emirates partnership, it has been so hard to get there, and also very expensive. Crazy but true fact, it is often cheaper to go to London or Europe with a stop over in Dubai in each direction than to simply fly from Australia to Dubai!

Has been talk for years that Etihad would kind of be absorbed into the EK group but just don’t see it happening.
EK will be just fine, they have a bottomless pit of money and are in the process of renewing and replacing their fleet. Once this is over I think they have the capacity to recover very quickly

And oil is at a big low point with everyone refusing to cut production because they want the cash.

Apparently not bottomless:

Yes but the interest rate will be <0.24% . Good time to borrow!

We’d be having a few billion at that rate if we could. :)

That whole theme park that is Dubai will come spectacularly falling down soon enough.

Personally it couldn't happen to a nicer horse killer…
History will probably be kind to the family as they dragged themselves out of the sand and into world prominence
