Is there travel insurance which will pay for a full fare flight if award flight is cancelled?

I have booked business award flights MEL-LAX (Qantas) then LAX-DUB (BA) and then return flights with Qatar. Wondering, as per the title of the thread, if there is any travel insurance which will pay for a full fare flight (as very likely there will be no award flights left and Qantas seem to do very little for the customer in these situations) if the award flight is cancelled? That is a cancellation before I fly or even whilst on the trip as I have read has happened to quite a people who have posted over in the Qantas forum.

If so is it likely they will reimburse for a revenue fare in the same class, ie business?

I’m not sure if there is insurance to cover this.

Insurance may cover points you cannot get back in the event of a cancellation, and these are generally calculated by taking a normal revenue fare, dividing that by the points you paid, and paying out on a cash prorata basis.

Qantas outbound you are protect by their terms and conditions… they *will* accommodate you on the next available service.

Once travel has commenced the airlines will have to look after you… so BA and QR. They can’t just leave you stranded by passing the buck back to qantas in the same way as before you leave.

I think it would be quite extraordinary to need insurance to cover the event of outright cancellation. The first thing the insurance company would want to see is any alternative flights offered by the respective carriers.
