After an anticipated sleepless night of CBR-SYD-SIN-HKG in J, I see that CX 714 often arrives at 0450 into HKG (T1). Is there a lounge with an espresso machine on arrival they'll allow me to stagger into?

That's a good time to use the lounge as I don't think the airport express services starts that early. If you have time to kill I'd also suggests getting a bus into the city. The A40 goes into the island but can take almost an hour in traffic. Much cheaper than the train and also good views from the top deck.

Yes, I agree SBF. I take the City bus A10 as that is very cheap and drops me in front of the T Hotel (the training hotel), on the Island where I get 5* treatment at 3 * price with a great sea view and brekky. Maybe at ~ 0600 ish the traffic will be still be comparably light. I have taken the train numerous times and find it a bit over airconded. The bus has quite good views and overall isn't too bad on timing.

traffic will be fine at that time, you'll be able to get a shower and a hot breakfast also in The Arrival.

personally i would wait for the AE to start at 0550 after a redeye (if the wait isn't too long after landing) as it will be nice and quiet vs the bus.

if you can team up with other travellers you can buy group tickets also that knock the one way price down to $80-$62.50 one way MTR > Travel in group on the Airport Express

Yes I probably got the bus number wrong. It's been some time since I've done the trip.

Great tip! But where/how to book? The prices also seem fairly expensive on their website... HKD1380 - but that seems to have been last updated in 2013. Are the prices lower now?

MEL_T, it is very 'select' as it only has about ~ 30 rooms I think it is. My rate for March is HK$1060 nett with breakfast. The only way to book is to email [email protected], which you do via thier website.

That rate is full refundable on 48 hour notice with cc guarantee, otherwise 1 night payment. All non smoking. Request an ocean view room.

If you have stayed in a training hotel before you would know that the callow young students are very enthustaic and helpful, if lacking a bit of experience. They are not only learning their trade, but also English too. They are supervised by highly experienced staff, but it does require a bit of patience on our behalf. There is a morning car into Central.

How does that price compare with you usually stay?

I read the reviews of the T-Hotel - sounds good. Just I was a bit surprised at the pricing for the location.

I usually stay in Wan Chai - JJ Hotel. Around AUD100 a night. No restaurant or pool (which would put it in the 4* category rather than 3.5*), but big rooms for HK standards. Very hard to get a room though.

A bit OT, but when arriving in SIN from QF at 2230 and departing on CX to HKG at 0115, both J, which lounge is best choice, if there is a choice?

General rule is to skip the CX lounge in Singapore and stay with QF and BA lounges where possible. The only advantage the CX lounge(it's outsourced and not even a proper CX lounge) is location to the departure gate

Thanks, I will go and check them out.

Skyview closed a few month ago and CX now use another Dnata lounge.
Oh. Already? Not good. If the Dnata lounge is opposite the Qantas lounge that's an ordinary lounge but believe is open all night.

better to check CX arrivals on the HK airport site to gauge the demand !

I arrived around 5am and the showers room were full very quickly as people were waiting for the airport express to open, and decided to have a shower first.

It is very small and few seats. The multiple coffees were good whilst waiting for the bus. I didn't have a shower, but they seemed busy. Hot foot in there asap is my advice.
