Just wanting some input to see whether it is worth me signing up.
Basically looking at $90 to sign up for the Qantas FF card and a $198 annual fee with ANZ.

I'm 21 and have very little to pay with it.
Monthly:
Phone Bill
Foxtel
Health Cover
Car Insurance
Petrol

And other general ****, which is hard to put a figure on (Car rego etc etc)

Would it be pointless considering the fees i would have to pay and the amount of points i would accrue? Credit is not exactly required at this point in time, but a credit rating cannot hurt.

Any advice would be appreciated!

quiksilva - not 100% sure of what you are asking. Any cc decisions depends on a) your expenditure, b) your needs, c) you income, and d) what you ware wanting out of a particular programme.

As to a Qantas FF, depends on how often you plan to travel - remember, you do have to fly four qualifying sectors per year to maintain any points in the programme.

But joining the QFF programme is free, just sign up for a Woolworths Everyday Reward Card and you get free QFF membership - just check out the Woolworths site. Then every time you shop at Woolworths, Big W etc etc etc you get points.

When ever these things pop up on ACA/TT/Sunrise etc, they bandy around numbers like $3,000+ (dont quote me) spend per month before you get any benefit. Charge less than this a month to the card and it is costing you money.

As pointed out, while you can still choose to pay $82.50 to QF to join QFF, these days the better option is to pop into a woolies/bws/safeway etc, pick up and everyday rewards card, register online and check the "I want to be a FF" box, same result zero outlay.

Yep, even my cat has a QF frequent flyer number...

(it allows for additional family transfers per annum all right! ;) )

Not quite - four sectors are necessary for you to achieve status. Points will continue to accrue whether you fly or not (subject to the account being "active")

.

As far as I'm aware, the flying four eligible QF sectors a year actually applies to attaining / maintaining the higher status levels, not to keeping points. To keep your points, you just have to earn or use some points every 18 months.

EDIT: Oops. Just saw that Codash had already posted same thing. Note to self: read ALL posts before jumping it!

Assuming 3 points per dollar, you would need to spend $7,340 to get one completely free return ticket from SYD-MEL. (no taxes, just arrive at airport and go)

Now on a good day you can buy a return ticket, SYD-MEL flying QF for $198. (Next week there are some flights which cost $99 each way)

Furthermore lets say you have purchased a ticket, in an upgradeable class on an international flight (which remember is more expensive that normal tickets), say a SYD-AKL from Discount Y to J, You would need to have spent $3400, to earn enough to upgrade one of the flights.

Certainly sign up to QFF, using Wollies as it's free, but the only real way to make cards and etc work for you is to already have the spend to justify it.
