It is again one of those issues where it all depends on who is travelling, where they are travelling, when they are travelling and how flexible they are with travel dates/times.
Last month I was playing around with the QF award booking engine and I had no problem planning a RTW of 16 sectors with 5 stopovers going to the places I wanted to go to in August/September 2008. Yet I know I will have problems trying to get 3 business class seats on a SYD-LHR or SYD-LAX flight unless I booked very early or even prepared to fly on different flights or days. Learn what you can and can't do with award seats and adapt plans to suit availability.
An interesting statistic would be how many available international award seats do not get used.

Outside of key routes i suspect a reasonable amount. I have managed a few awards easily even upto days before traveling on the non AU-USA & AU-ASIA-EU routes. Ones like Japan etc seem to be ok on availability.
