I'm heading to the UK next week and was toying with the idea of getting an iPad2 airside at the Apple stand (if possible).

If anyone has a free moment walking past would they mind seeing if the Apple store actually has any stock.

I don't think there's an Apple store at the airport, but rather a "stand" as part of the Sydney Duty-Free-Ripoff complex.

1800 733 000 is the number of Sydney Duty Free. They may be able to assist. Their online site didn't show any Ipads (but plenty of other Apple products).

I haven't looked, but have you checked the iPad price in the UK vs AU? I suspect they would be a decent amount cheaper due to current exchange rates (and you can claim VAT when you depart).

Hi Mal,

Thanks for letting me know about the duty free number.

I have checked the OS prices and it looks like Australia is actually holding up pretty well for Apple products since the Aussie Peso is doing so well.

For instance at the moment a $32Gb wifi only iPad2 would be:

AUS $689 less GST ~$626
USA $599 AU$560
SIN $798 AU$604
UK £479 AU$734
GER ₡579 AU$787

I could probably look to get one in Singapore on my stop-over but for $20 extra its probably worth buying it in Australia since apple cant knock back a warranty claim as they are apparently doing on those bought OS.

Don't bother with Singapore, I was there last Friday the day it was released and they sold out country wide within 2 hours.

I also wouldn't hold my breath that Sydney will have stock either. I flew to CGK 2 weeks ago, they had none then. I also flew to SIN last week from MEL, and they also had none.

You are probably better off buying one from an Apple store/reseller and claiming TRS, works out a couple bucks cheaper than getting it from the airport anyway.

The warranty should work world-wide so long as it’s genuine and wasn’t stolen, I’ve bought several products in different countries to where I’ve had them serviced under warranty.

Apple warranty is worldwide so as Sam says there will be no problem no matter which country you buy it in.

The SMH had an article last week about how iPad 2 is in short supply everywhere so I would just buy it anywhere you can find it here in Sydney and get TRS rebate at the airport.

Can you still pre-order them online?

I ordered mine online from an apple retail store, joined the virtual cue, waited a week, got the call, went down to Apple Robina and picked it up.

Yes, they clapped and cheered me out of the store.

Back OT.... But one in Australia, don't have to worry about the Adaptor. The iPad uses a more powerful charger than normal USB or iPhone chargers... You can still use the older ones, but they don't charge while the iPad is on, or as fast when you turn the device off.

All brilliant discussions and ideas thanks FFyers :D.

I only heard secondhand about an iPad2 warranty being knocked back by Apple in the UK as it was was purchased in the USA, so great to know this isn't the case.

Looks like a day of trawling stores for the illusive goods.
