ING Bank Dropping 5 Free Overseas ATM Withdraw Benefit from 1/8/23

So id almost forgotten about this account which I opened a few weeks before they announced the were removing all the benefits that made the account worth opening. I never bothered jumping through the deposit/transaction hoops nor ever using it (apart form initial deposit).

Transferred all the $ out but it wont let you close the account online. Have been on hold for over 2 hours as can only close over the phone. What terrible service.

Id hate to be calling about a lots or stolen card. They will never get me back as a customer; make it easy to open online and accept deposits but so difficult to close.

In the App…

Not possible if its the last/only everyday account you hold.

I could close the linked bonus saver online or via the app, BUT then when you click on the last remaining account i.e. the Orange Everyday you get a pop up telling you that you have to call.

Finally spoke to someone after 140 minutes, who confirmed yes cant close Orange Everyday online if its your last account. She asked me why I wanted to close it and I told her because I opened it for the overseas ATM rebate which was removed before I could use it; she laughed and said most cancellations have been because of those changes and promptly closed the account and sent an email confirmation.

Efficient once I got through, but the wait time made Hellstra or Qantas look super speedy.

Wanted some € cash recently to keep for a rainy day...in Helsinki, using this Ing Orange card, the ATM fee was either €4.50 or €5. In Tallinn, there was no ATM fee so withdrew €300 there. In Helsinki, Stockholm and Tallinn, we used credit card which was accepted everywhere. We only needed € cash to tip the "Free Walking Tour" guide in Tallinn and Helsinki. The guide in Stockholm accepted a tip online :)

Still have the account for the Savings Maximiser (best in class for ongoing bonus interest rate). Plus, you can still use fee free OS in ATMs and as a DC.

The other day, I walked the length and breadth of Montreal searching for an ATM that I could use my soon to be useless Citi card and there’s nothing… I‘d left my ING card in the room but turns out I possibly could have used it for free in the Scotia Bank ATMs…😔

It will be interesting to learn what is actually now charged of the first 5 transactions.

In June/July it was certainly easy for us to use the ING to get cash from ATMs in Toronto, Quebec, Montreal, Banff and Vancouver.

You can still use it pretty much anywhere but wherever there’s a local ATM charge you’ll have to pay that. Vancouver had fee free ATMs when we were there a few weeks ago. It might just be a Quebec thing with all ATMs charging a fee (from $2 to $4.50).

In Canada from memory Banks are not allowed to charge ATM fees.

Montreal missed that memo…! Even National Bank - that’s supposed to be fee free for Citi was asking $4.50.

But I also did see ATMs in Vancouver charging a fee. Vancity ATMs were fee free.

Surprised you are needing to take cash out so frequently in Canada. It was pretty much possible to be cash free there in 2018, hard to imagine fewer places taking cards now.

Macquarie card would seem to have the edge over ING now as no Macquarie fees for foreign ATM use or for foreign purchases and no deposit or transaction hurdles.

Actually, you are correct. I just checked in my IN Account and I can see rebates of $5.00...

I cannot remember all the Banks now, but Scotia I think was the one in Montreal which worked. Bank of Montreal the card did not work.

Each ATM withdrawl receives two rebates, one for International ATM Withdrawl Fee (varied) and one for International ATM Fee Rebate ($5.00)

We were there for 6 weeks, so was not too frequent, and I prefer to not carry large amounts of cash.

Cash still has its applications, though mainly for smaller things. So we always keep a float on us.

"Free Walking Tours", yes you can often pay by card, but a queue forms for payment. So with cash you just pay and you are off without waiting.

We often go off the beaten track and in more rural settings some places do not have a card payment system.

Buskers, small vendors selling fruit etc.

Plus every now and then the EFTPOS Machine may be not working. Some machines also reject the credit/debit card despite us having multiple different cards due to it being Australian issued.

Lots of cash only places in Montreal. Vancouver was tap everywhere….

Must be a French thing, I only came across 1 place on my recent 5 weeks overseas trip that was cash only and that was the take-away counter at Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans (noting that dine in did take cards).

In fact many places in UK, Ireland and Finland and NYC were card only.

I can confirm this as I have used Macquarie card without any issues in England/France and apparently their conversion rate is better compared to ING.

That’s interesting to note, not that I use cash overseas much these days.

I also love Macquaries app. Extremely good UI and they are always adding features.

Currently in Bali...went to the Mandiri bank ATM which surprisingly didn't charge any fee. And ING of course rebated their $5 charge. So some free withdrawals still available.

Yeah I recently used the Orange in Tallinn without àn ATM fee. The ING $5 fee was rebated. The ATMs in Finland wanted a €4.50 or 5 fee. :( ...so didn't use those!
