We are having our first child soon - and from what I can ascertain, travelling with an infant (less than 2 years, not occupying a seat) is not an option in SQ J/F.

I know I can purchase a seat at 100% of the adult rate, but that is ridiculous if the baby is 3 months old.

Am I correct that QF allows an infant in J/F @10% of the adult rate, whereas SQ do not? This will have a major impact on my choice of airlines.

As far as I am aware infants less than 2 go free if not occupying a seat but from personal expereience you may want to purchase them a seat once they hit 1 as you will be standing for a long time otherwise!! Just request the bassinet seat. No guarentees you will get it so beware

I have been looking into this a fair bit recently. :) On SQ they can sit on your lap for 10% of the adult price.

Are you sure?

When I try a booking on the SQ website:

Y Class - infants are 10%
J Class - infant comes up at the same price as the adult.
F Class - infants comes up at 10%

I don't know if this is a bug in their booking system. I used a MEL-SIN one way booking as a test. 1 adult, 0 children, 1 infant

No not sure, but I was reading about redeeming award tickets with an infant, and apparently the process is to book the adult award ticket online and then call to add the infant and pay 10% of the adult fare. So it might be worth giving them a call?

Quick check of the rules on the SQ website found this for the 'C' class fares it was throwing up

CHD/INF DISCT DO NOT APPLY.UNACCOMPANIED CHD/INF UNDER 12 NOT PMTD.

Best I can tell, the infant is assigned a seat.

Just had a look on Expertflyer - looks like it varies depending on the destination. Every destination that I checked other than Singapore allows an infant to travel for 10% of the adult fare.

I can't speak for expect flyer because I don't use it (obviously don't have the need with having GDS access), but i'm not sure how accurate the information they have is.

I checked a range of destinations SE Asia, JNB, LON and all stated no discounts for children/infants.

Looks like it's across the board to me.

Some airlines discourage infants in the premium cabins - LH is one of these.

QF on the other hand bends over backwards to help with bassinets, baby food etc.

If an airline started "child free" flights, as in no children on the flight, it would, in my opinion, be a winner.

One of my pet hates when flying is having to put up with young children crying, screaming etc.

Maybe they should ban old people as well. They seem to cause lots of problems.

I was just about to say... quite often the drunk yobbos are more of a pain than the crying babies (of which I have very rarely experienced, even when being right next to the bassinet.

I was looking at using the LH RTW First Class Fare but LH refused to let the infant go at 10%.

Infants seem to be completely free on Jetstar International - even in star class. QFF points booked flights in any class have zero charge for infants.

Also, unlike most US airlines, QF lets infants into a higher cabin for free when the accompanying adult(s) get a points upgrade

This is one of the downsides to the AA program in that you cant use points for infants - you have to pay 10% of full fare/ I need to book [insert name here]'s trip to the UK now that I am into a new Amex month...

When booking award tickets, would the charge for an infant be determined by the frequent flyer program or the operating carrier?

Varies by carrier. QF charges the taxes and surcharges for an infant and they issue a zero dollar airfare paper ticket for the journey for the taxes and surcharges. This may be an e-ticket now, although 12 months ago we both had e-tickets and junior received a paper ticket in the mail.

I have to agree with MelUser's comments on QF - they certainly do bend over backwards for infants and kids alike, in J and Y.

We have also traveled in J with BA and IB who are certainly not in the same league as QF when it comes to the wee one's. QF at check-in also blocked out a J seat next to us on one of our long hauls so that Mum, Dad and junior all got a sleep in their own Skybed - sure the cabin was only 90% full, however they made sure that the empty seat was next and we had a row of 3 x J seats to ourselves.

Hi - are you referring to award tickets or paid tickets?

Not sure whether your query is in relation to the paper ticket or taxes and surcharges.

In the situation I referenced the paper ticket was in relation to an award ticket. The e-ticket was issued for the adult linked with the infant and the infant received a paper ticket. I also received a paper ticket for taxes and surcharges for an infant linked to a paid ticket 6 months earlier, although this was on UA not QF.

As all carriers should now be issuing e-tickets, so hopefully paper tickets are a thing of the past, even for reward tickets.

With respect to taxes and surcharges, I have had to pay these regardless of paper or e-ticket.
